Uh, yeah. I wish I had a clue. I'm on a brand new computer that is working very well so far except for that. This is the first time I have not been able to make a purchase, even though I am a slow typist. I had thought that signing in might speed things up. In the past, I never bothered, I just entered the info and checked out. Maybe the failed sign in had nothing to do with my subsequent problems. I am not sure how best to proceed next time.
If it's a Vista computer and you're using IE7 as your Web browser, then that might have something to do with it. We've had reports at work that some people using that combination have trouble logging into some of our webapps. Unfortunately, we've been unable to replicate the issues they describe on our Vista test computers, either from inside or outside of our primary firewall. However, without specific knowledge about either system, unless you got a security related error message, I'd still suspect that the issue is on the other end, but that it'll only occur under a heavy load.
