That is all good advice. If you don't feel like putting it through the dishwashers, most normal hand soaps are designed to remove oils (that's why you get dry skin from washing your hands too much), so that would probably work. I generally advise using a lanyard or D-guard on large choppers for safety reasons. I don't think lanyards are neccessary on small knives unless:
1. you're doing a lot of ice-pick stabbing
2. you're working over a river or the sea-- that way you're less likely to lose your knife.
I usually carry a couple pre-made loops of Paracord in my PSK because you can turn them into lanyards via a cow-hitch knot, or you can turn them into ascending devices via a prussik knot
