Don't know if I'd use a baitcasting reel for salmon, but to each their own. Who knows? It might work for you.
As for rods, if you're shore fishing, something with good flexibility is very important, and it doesn't need to be longer than 7 feet.
If you live near a Bass Pro, go into the store, check out the rods they have there and find one you like. You don't have to buy one there, I just find they have a wider selection to look through and find what I want to eventually buy. Any store with a good large selection of rods will help you find something you like. Grip, casting feel, just the way the rod feels as you're moving with it, will help decide your equipment. If you're not comfortable and happy with your gear, it'll show in your fishing. It doesn't have to be top notch, just right for you.
