other options are similar
- instead of looping back like in step 5, just cross and keep running in the same direction. Sort of like the wrap on a samurai sword, except in that case you're using a flat material and that's folded twice where they cross. There's a good picture here: http://www.katana4u.com/pages/silk.htm if you look close you can see where the material is turned/twisted.
- a series of overhand knots. Knots end up running in a spiral.
- straight run - just wrap, wrap, wrap, nothing fancy.

550 cord/parachute cord is pretty inexpensive so it's not a too large an investment to buy some and just experiment. - And in an emergency/survival situation you can peel it off to use, not to mention the 6 or so strands of "guts" inside of it.
