Most of all, try to teach her the importance of carrying herself with confidence and not looking like an easy victim. When it comes to human predators this can be one of the best ways to keep yourself out of harms way. Bad guys don't want to mess with someone who looks like they'll fight back when there are plenty of others who look frail and meek.

- and if she's opposed to weapons, how about an air horn? Loud noise that draws attention can be extremely effective. They come in a smaller size these days(smaller than the old freon can ones).
