Chris Reeve's site has a good descrition of how they tie their lanyard/fob. It is really easy and quick. 60 seconds to do!

It is a fob day in day out and a lanyard when you need it.

I'm not big on fobs/lanyards on folders as they can hinder deployment.

Over water is a different story.
