Most of the time we just get pulled out by a friends Jeep. Winches work well in certains areas and in certain situations. Seeing a winch cable snap and go flying through the air reminds you just how dangerous they can be if you don't take proper precautions.

When I got my Jeep stuck deep in a river several months ago (see pic below) it took a Bronco and a Jeep both with V8's to pull me out. My dad tried to pull me out, but it was muddy and his inline 6 with very little traction was not enough. This stunt below cost me about $1700 (tranny rebuild) and some goodwill with my wife.
