I didn't know Penn directed that film.... by the time it was over, I was completely disgusted....and didn't watch the credits.

I think that McCandliss, the book, and the movie, take away from real individuals that chose a "free from the world" lifestyle and learned from others willing to help and give them the real "how to" so they could survive.
