Every once in awhile, I buy a knife simply because I like the style of it.

This is why I have Gerber Sheridan. It's my only tanto, the acquisition of which tells a story about the knife collector community.

When I was new to knives, and $50 was a lot for a knife, I joined BF and read all the flak about Gerber. Sure enough, I avoided the Gerbers I was attracted to for just that. The sheridan was eventually discontinued and I was spending hundreds on what I thought were far superior tools.

Eventually I came of age and realized how huge a portion of that community never use their knives and exaggerate the benefits of their top shelf blades. High end steels serve more benefit to manufacturers than the consumer. A $25 import can do about 99% of what one will need to do with a knife. Only in staged scenarios do we see the advantage of a few supersteels, but most don't even deliver what their price tags demand in these tests either.

As for the Sheridan, I was lucky to find one eventually on eBay, new in box, for about regular price.
