Thanks for the responses. I never heard of a Fire Piston (I' new at this) but it looks interesting. What I am trying to get to work is the Fire Plow. I have oak as the hard wood plow and pine as the soft base. Lost of smoke but no actual coals. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> More practice I guess.
One difference perhaps, in the Somoan fire plow and yours is that softwood is used for both the base (stave in the article) and the plow. I don't know what effect this will have but it may be worth a try.
