I have two Gerber multi-tools, and my experience with them couldn't be more different.

My "600" was given to me for college graduation in 1997, and been a great tool. I have not, however, used it for anything "really strenuous".

My "Crux" was bought by me in 2008, and while much more ergonomic doesn't seem to be made nearly as "tough" or precise (pliers line up poorly, etc).

I know this doesn't address the OP, but it does mimic the general consensus that "old Gerber" multi-tools are good-to-go, but the new ones are not.
