As Vic suggested, a ceramic rod is a safe, easy way to keep a blade sharp. It will also teach you the basics of controlling the edge angle while you sharpen. And, because it doesn't aggressively remove steel, it makes it very difficult to ruin your knife as you're learning...unlike a belt sander.
