Don't forget about bear repellent: 10 yard by 30 degree wide arc from one quick blast, and powerful enough to stop a charging grizzly in its tracks.
Or you can always make your own mace. Get some really hot pepper seeds. Put them in a jar and cover with some high proof alcohol. Leave it for a week shaking a couple times a day. Distill off the alcohol. Then the hot pepper oil you can cut with some mineral oil.
You can buy pure capsaicin from some stores that sell hot sauces and gourmet foods (oops! Almost forgot... we're talking about Britain, land of "meat pasties" and "suet pudding" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ), or order it online from hot sauce resellers.
