My uncle uses a gel, probably like what you mentioned, it works pretty well and actually isn't very fluid, it's more like toothpaste. I personally am not fond of it, because once it's down, it's staying put, but it works. IMO, I'd rather be able to pick up and move it if I need to reposition it. One good thing about the gel, you can coat the tip of a small stick and use it like a match.
