I'm old enough and traveled enough to have been a victim of thieves and don't intend to become a victim of predators. That being said, I travel with as much equipment that I can forsee a use for and can maintain control of. Depending on the logistics of your trip take a large heavy duty knife in your bug out bag, don't travel without one. A smaller more practical knife for more common chores and a folder that will actually be with you at all times for those needs that arise. The same can be said for firearms, depending on the legalities of the areas traveled. I feel uncomfortable leaving too much gear behind in camp or my car, or hotel room, for there are those that will allways be wanting to steal them from you. You have to strike a balance between what you think you may need and what you can live with if you lose your gear.
Safe travels my friend be aware and have fun.
