Some families of the martial arts emphasize slashing instead of stabbing.

Not being a martial artist I subscribe to slashing in self defense instead of stabbing. Stabbing I would think would require more of an accuracy aspect whereas slashing works anywhere. That's why I always carry a Karambit (Emerson combat karambit) if I have on long pants. wink

Oh and the intimidation factor definitely enters in as well. grin
