I think the main reason I'd want a wharncliff blade would be for wood carving.
I'm not sure I understand the logic of using them for self defense?
Wouldn't the main goal be to get deep penetration and fastness over slashing ability?
Some families of the martial arts emphasize slashing instead of stabbing.
Not being a martial artist I subscribe to slashing in self defense instead of stabbing. Stabbing I would think would require more of an accuracy aspect whereas slashing works anywhere. That's why I always carry a Karambit (Emerson combat karambit) if I have on long pants.
Oh and the intimidation factor definitely enters in as well.
