Just kidding.

I've read a lot of reasons / explanations. None of them make sense based upon the way we tried to fight in VN.

You have to remember we were moving toward a conscript military (like Russia) with less trained soldiers. Fire superiority seemed important at the time..instead of accurate deadly fire.

We learned about mass communist attacks in Korea, and decided wounding the enemy took two soldiers out of battle instead of just killing one.

Etc etc.

I'm not in the infantry, and will never be fighting off hordes of zombies (much to the chagrin of some here wink ). As such, I want ballistic superiority. I want the ability to punch through light armor, stop vehicles, and make the bad guy DEAD RIGHT THERE.

The 5.56 has a place, however. My 5'-4" x 115# wife simply can't handle a 308.

She can, and does, shoot an AR15, AKM (in 5.56x45mm) and Scar-16 exceedingly well though.

Ironically, she was best with the SLR-106FR (5.56x45mm AKM) before we mounted an ACOG on her Scar. Then she was consistently printing 1" groups at 100 yards (10 round groups). The AR was her worst. She hated the recoil impulse, and charging handle arrangement. In her words, "this is stupid".

She consistantly printed 1.75-2.25" groups with her SLR-106FR and cheap Wolf ammo.

ALL of the SLR's I've shot have been exceedingly accurate (on par with a standard M4). I'd take an AKM over an AR any day.

I envy the two of you, and your same mindset. Patty thinks a lot of things I do is kinda silly, but I'm working on her. Now to get her to realize I REALLY need a $300.00 knife! grin

My wife and I rarely agree on ANYTHING. That's no exaggeration.

People have asked me for years "if you had to pick one rifle what would it be". That's a dumb question, because I don't have to (even in their context of "bugging out" or whatever).

For me, I'm going to select a licensed FAL or Scar-17 every time...with a 22LR rifle.

For my wife, she'd pick the Scar-16 (with ACOG) or SLR-106FR if no optic was available.

Fortunately for us, we have the freedom to pick basically anything we want (short of currently produced F/A NFA).

This reminds me of a Mike Myers quote.
