If the firearm in question is a strong modern action it can be loaded up to very impressive levels
A Ruger #1 can be hot loaded to ALMOST approach 458 winning
I have a 450 marlin which is essentially a modern 45/70 and there isn't anything on North America that I wouldn't hunt with it

Now the 375 H&H is in a completely different class than the 45/70 both in terms of versatility and reach

The only animal that I have personally seen shot with a 375 was a grizzly that my brother harvested a couple of years ago

The 375 hit with AUTHORITY

Yes in parts of Africa .375H&H is the minimum for dangerous game, some argue that it is light on for Cape Buffalo but I am willing to bet it will serve me just fine (as it has many many others). I have taken more than my share of Asiatic Buffalo with mine (a looooong time ago now) and I was knocking the snot out of them with 300gn Sierras. They are arguably as hard as a Cape Buff just not as romanticised wink Newer projectiles such as the Woodleigh Hydros lift them up further in performance.

I can also use my H&H day in and out without ill effect, many 45/70s will pummel you worse !!! That said, I would love a marlin "Guide Gun" in 45/70...!!!!!

Lately I've been thinking I want a S&W Model 13 (blue) or 65 (stainless). Fixed sights and bull barrel, they're really speaking to me right now.

K Frame S&W revolvers are something special. My recommendation to non "gun" people for a carry piece is always a K Frame S&W. My personal favourite is the 10/64 or 13/65 in three inch. The round butt preferably but mine was a square. I had one of my own and one of the Govt's for a good number of years and never once felt as though I were at a disadvantage. I shot either exceptionally well and (as I demonstrated more than a couple of times) could worry a hostile greatly wink at 50yds with that little 'Smith.

I'm looking for a dedicated shooter. I would love a department trade-in.

OK, maybe you're not either. But this little Model 60-10 is a dream to carry.

I really wish that mine were a 6 shooter, but you can't have everything.

I can attest to this for sure my light little lever really knocks the heck out of your shoulder. I loaded up some mildly hot loads for it, just 20 and I still have 5 of them they are limited to new friends(before someone warns them lol) and are a here try one of these loads. lol
