We've gone from 15 year old boys with knives to "Privates" saluting the General in just a few posts.....

Sigh...

The $50-$100 price range leaves out any Bussekin. Otherwise, I would get a 411. Good size and weight so it's easy to carry. The handle and tang may not be conducive to batoning though. The only knives that I have personal knowledge of in your price range would be the Becker Knife and Tool made by Kbar in the USA. I think all of them are below $100. They have a full tang, a bit skeletonized, and come in two size ranges. Full sized models and three, #15, 16 and 17, that are smaller. They are all made in the USA and have a great warranty. I have several models and have been pleased with the performance of all of them. Depending on the size of your son's hand and the particular usage, I would say either one of the small or just about any of the rest of the line.

Yeah, I am looking at new Beckers and/or used ESSEE--snatching up a deal on a Bussekin might be good too--long shot, but every now and then....

Just wondering if there's anything out there I haven't considered that I ought to. smile

If Rowan does the heat treat for Ontario Knife Co.(I am not sure), I believe Ontario Knife Co. and esee use to be tied together before a falling out, I would recommend the Ontario Rat-7. You can get one for $100. It looks like a bigger esee 6.

I take my recommendation back. After further research, it sounds like they had and may still have bad heat treat.

I say, have him take some odd jobs for people and earn 50-75 bucks and then you pay the rest for a Ratmandu.

Have you ever seen one of these? Would something like that work?

That's the only picture I could find of the knife.

Interesting Randy, haven't seen that before. He has the cash to supplement, but is saving for college--kid is a skinflint wink

I am kicking myself for missing the Taliwhacker that just sold for $100 on the forum. THAT would have been perfect.
