Greetings from Kathmandu.

I have scored a couple Khukris from a Gurkha. I set them next to a Paratchutmandu for size comparison. The large one is HEAVY. It has to be the thickest blade I own.

The Gurkha was chopping red bricks with one to show its strength. I inspected the blade and there were no chips in the cutting edge.

[Linked Image from lh6.googleusercontent.com] One of these little guys is a tiny knife. The other is a knife steel for sharpening.

The man I bought them from showed me two categories; tourist knives and work knives. The highly decorated knives were not full tang, thinner blades and he said he doesn't recommend using them. I didn't buy those.

WOW JJ. You didn't waist any time in scoring! AND it was nice he informed you about the different categories. I have heard that some of those knives reach a half inch thickness at the spine.

Looks pretty bad especially in the rural areas close to the epicenter.

Skunk, I think this one is more than half inch. I'll take a pic with a ruler tomorrow. I think Leatherman had one on it.

I've been working with the Red Cross, Fairfax County and L.A. fire department out here as well as tons of U.S. and international agencies. Tour in the sisters out here is inspiring as you notice all the nations involved. The world has responded!

JJ posted on Facebook that he was OK but everything is really hectic at the moment, as you can imagine.

The little knife is a karda. The one for steeling the blade is a chakmak.
