I got a few rifles sighted in for the upcoming deer season over the weekend. My main two rifles will be the CZ527 with a Meopta 4x and a H&R Handi Rifle with a .270 barrel and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40. I'll also be taking a .357 barrel topped with a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 as well. The .357 is mostly for when I can get a family to go along with me. I will most likely take it out a few times myself since I'm really liking the way the setup turned out. Between those three I think I have some good whitetail medicine.

We had about 20 acres cleared where I normally hunt and the rest of the property is overgrown brush that's too thick to even bother with. Last year I was able to hunt from behind the wood piles but that all will be gone this year. I'm comfortable with the little CZ in the woods but I'm hoping to get some more time with the .270 and give myself a little more reach in the open fields and trails. I also want to get more familiar with using Kentucky windage and BDC reticles with higher power cartridges. It also has me thinking it's time to invest in a decent rifle rest. I'd like to see what these rifles are capable of. Might even save me some of the sight in hassles.

I also took a couple pistols with me and shot them from a few yards out. I'm really liking the Shield a lot for what it is. Once I find some SD ammo I like it's going to be my go to edc. I'm actually considering getting one without a safety though. It's maybe not an issue to just to not use the safety but now I'm leaning towards just not having to worry with it at all. I forgot I had flipped it on at the range and when there was no boom I realized what a screw up that could turn into on another occasion.

I also put about 30 rounds through my FNP45 with the super barrel in it. It's a beast! My initial concern was that JHP ammo might not feed reliably because of the extremely shallow feed ramp. I polished it up a while back and so I haven't had a single problem with feeding or anything else. I've only put up to 6 rounds in the mags but nothing suggests there will be problem. So far I'm liking the 180gr Double Tap and I'll probably get a couple more boxes of it for my next range trip. The joker kicks an after about 10-15 rounds you wikke start to notice that it's got some pep to it. It's shootable but it's definitely not an all day plinker lol. I'm hoping it will make a good woods pistol for times when I come across a nice buck that's just a few feet away. The CZ is handy but after missing opportunities at extremely close distances I think it'll be wise to have something even more handy.

Here's the shooting rest I'm looking at. The reviews seem pretty good. It seems simple enough yet well built (in USA). It is also supposed to work with 30 round mags, pistol grips, and pistols. And there's a vise option...

I applaud you on your thinking to go with a "safety less" handgun for SD purposes. MANY of them, Glock and Sig being two VERY nice systems along with others have no safety "Lever" at all. Yes some do have the "Safety in the Trigger" but I personally would not call this a safety.

I daily carry (SD and at work) a Ruger LC9 with CTC laser guard and it is a double action with a manual safety. The trigger pull is LONG, but smooth and not really that overly heavy to me and I carry it with the manual safety off! It is always in a holster on my belt so I don' feel unsafe at all. Others may claim this is dangerous, but I am accustomed to pulling and firing and if I had to deactivate a safety in a real world situation I could easily fumble it or forget it. I would rather trust in training and familiarity. Just me, and your mileage may vary.
