Humans have fragile bodies and inflated views of their position in nature. All things in nature are in constant movement, and this is often diametrically opposed to what we want or need. I've heard a lot of outdoors-people say "mother nature is always trying to kill you". I disagree. Nature (weather, water, elements, whatever) doesn't care about you.
Wild animals view you either as a threat or (tasty) treat.
I'd rather not end up finding my way through an animal's digestive system.

Gary, you are SO right. Nature doesn't care one way or the other about us. Nature is what it is and always will be.
YUP, we ARE fragile, no matter what we think. If you were to put us "In the wild" like the animals are, with only our wits and what God naturally gave us, most of us would die within a month.

I was about to say humans are top of the food chain in New England, then remembered the new and large population of Great Whites that has been established around Cape Cod.

In all (disgusting and distasteful...you'll get the pun shortly) seriousness:
I've read several survival novels wherein people are referred to as "long pork".

Yep....Long Pork is the given term, does not seem to develop the nice crackling that a hog does though... getting good fava beans and a decent chianti is often the most difficult part...
