About half way through the first book. They just discovered that "The Posse" is headed their way. And Yeah, got me thinking about our preps as well.

Then you will want to read "One Year After" by the same author, Bill Forstchen. I finished that one last night. I really like the way he writes and the technical aspects are well researched. His novels are relevant, as an EMP could happen at any moment, even as I type this. The names would change but the actions and reactions of people would unfortunately be quite similar.

When I was in Japan, our whole duty section was EMP hardened. At least they said it was.

You would THINK that our politicians would be concerned about it but sadly they are not.

Well think about it. Hammering about it wouldn't really get them all that many votes, if any. I read somewhere how to make your own faraday cage. I don't think it's all that hard, but I could VERY easily be wrong.

I have a couple of very old tube transmitters and receivers for use after an EMP event but the question is: who will I be able to contact?

Ray, as YOU know, it may not be that much about contacting someone, but keeping track of what's going on. BUT being able to ask someone for help or information would be right there near or at the top of the list.

Commo? Honestly, if you have a local group, family, friends etc. A Baofang radio is pretty simple. Easy to program and a cheap Ham radio. I mean in the 23 dollar range cheap. You can make repeaters out of a pair of them etc. I have several all programmed the same.
They are not the best, but they are simple and beat any of the Motorola FRS GMRS radios that I have had. You can change the antennae and get a decent distance. An old microwave actually makes a dent faraday cage. (really, for real).
They are my stuff has gone bad commo kit. The repeaters and radios technically need to be licensed if you transmit on them. In an emergency, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. The FCC could fine me, but I think the lesser of two evils wins in the end.
I am working on my HAM license now.

Good for you M/B...go for it. I have been thinking about getting a ham radio myself, just have to study my book for a license. A 55 gallon open top steel drum makes for a great Faraday cage, and I have several items in it. Just line it with cardboard so that nothing touches the sides, bottom, or top. I have another 58 gallon steel drum with a 2200 watt inverter generator in it, laying sideways of course. Just one more thing I have but hope to never need to use, along with Coleman stoves and LP converters, a Brinkman LP oven, and several water filters. A LOT of bottled water and various food items make for comfort even with just ice storms or extended power outages, and a few 12 volt batteries, power inverters, and LED lights keep us well lit, while our Pro-Com and Big Buddy LP heaters have kept us warm and cozy. I have a few solar panels as well to charge the batteries if needed. Yes, I take the possible threat of an EMP seriously.
