It all started last night. Patty and I went over to see my Dad. He didn't look well and sounded even worse. Couldn't get him to go to the hospital but he did agree to go to a health clinic in town today.

Fast forward. Got a call from the clinic. Said Dan needed to go to the hospital. Told them he wouldn't go for us but might if they said he should. They "Recommended" he go and he said yes.

Fast forward again. ER said light heart attack in the last 2-3 days and pneumonia. Blood pressure very low and Oxygen level would not come up above 86%. Cardiologist said (after about 4 hours of different tests) heart only pumping at 15 percent TOTAL!
Don't know if cause is infection, virus(?) or old age (88) or just worn out. HOPEFULLY will know more tomorrow.

IF infection or etc, they can do something. If just worn out, nothing they can do. Not sure exactly what that means, or rather how long, but we are praying and have hopes it is just something medication can fix and he can last for a few more years at least. BUT he has made the statement to us in the past that he is tired and is ready. Well he might be, but we're not!

Have you ever seen some just give up? It isn't easy to witness specially when it is someone you love. Oh and did I mention that Dad has NEVER had to go to the hospital for anything before and now he is laying in the ICU and possibly might not get out.
Thanks everyone.

It is very tough to handle but you are tougher smile

My wife's father believed you only went to the hospital to die. When he didn't on the first visit he was a little easier to live with LOL. They call them the greatest generation I believe that but my experience says they are the most stubborn gen smile

Hang in there and I will keep you and him in my prayers and thoughts

OK an update on the Skunk Dad.

Was told today he tested positive for MRSA. We gotta wear masks now and gloves if we touch him or any part of his bed.

His Aortic valve is smaller than what is normal. They say he has Aortic Valve Stenosis. Say AT BEST he MIGHT have 5 years if EVERYTHING goes perfectly from here on out.

They want his BP to be NOT MORE than 100 on the top number and would like it to be in the 70-80 range (I think they said) on the bottom due to his heart not being able to handle all the strain of a normal BP. And they want his HR to be in the 60-70 range but it doesn't want to go below the 90's so far.

They have finally got his oxygen level up to a consistent 90-94 WHICH THEY ARE VERY HAPPY WITH. BUT he is on 60 percent pure Oxygen and a normal Oxygen tube does not blow enough in to him so he is having to wear an Oxygen tube that is about an inch thick going down to a half inch Inside Diameter.

He is BY FAR not out of the woods yet but at least for today he is doing better than he was yesterday. He has a positive attitude and that means a lot.

Again, thank you EVERYONE for all your well wishes and prayers.

Just talked to the Doc. Things have gotten worse. Dad probably won't make it out if the hospital. May not make it a month. They are trying to get mom up here from the nursing home so she can see him before...

Well, nothing new on Dad. He is fighting a loosing battle and we all know it. Doc said today he doesn't see Dad getting out of the hospital at all. Quite possibly won't get out of ICU, and the way he is going now may not last a week. BUT it is not written in stone the Doctor says. Things COULD change if God wants them to, but there isn't anything else they can do for him to help him improve above what they are already doing.

It's not easy as MANY of you already know, but we are hanging in there the best we can. One day at a time and continue with the hopes and prayers things will improve, all the while knowing that they probably won't.

Thank you to every one of you who has sent something our way. It means a lot.

Randy

We understand the feelings Randy; the General's Dad is fighting kidney dialysis. He knows he will have to do it, but the question is whether he says he's ready to do it.

Got a meeting with Dad's "Case Worker" this morning at 0930. I am afraid of what she might want to talk about. You see Dad had me sign a Medical Power of Attorney on him two days ago. I know his wishes and want to honor them, but still... frown

He is now on a BPAP machine/mask. Last step before intubation (?), something he DOES NOT want per living will they never told us about until Tuesday evening.

Randy, I am sorry to hear that. The world suffers when we lose good men and as a whole, we are diminished. The fact that good men have lived and passed those values and moral compass onto their children means that at least part of them will live forever. Thus continuing to improve the world.

Thank You Chris.

I know many of you have lost loved ones as well, parents other family members. It means a lot when let's face it, pretty much strangers say these things to us and we KNOW they really truly mean it, not just paying lip service.

Thank you all

Thank You Bill.

Mom has two brothers still living and they have kids and grand kids. On Dad's side there are only a hand full of cousins. There might be 25 to 30 max if you count everyone out to third cousins.

Finally got Dad's arrangements completed.

Interred at the Veterans Cemetery at 1pm this Friday. Memorial service on site, no other service was wanted by him.

Thank You MB.

Word of warning for anyone contemplating cremation. When they say the remains will come in a box, that is what they mean! A CARDBOARD BOX!!! We picked up Dad's ashes at the Funeral home late yesterday afternoon. I asked Kacey to look inside the covering (I thought) outside box. She said that they came in a wooden or suitable plastic box. NOT ANY MORE, at least around here. Now we have to see if the Veterans Cemetery provides something or if Dad will be buried in a white cardboard box.

Sadly, another part of the funeral business is SELLING containers for ashes, whether they are ceramic, metal, etc.

The Veterans Honor Guard should perform their service regardless of the container; that's what we do around here.

That sound like an unfortunate shock Randy and I'm sorry to hear it. I know we had to pick a suitable box for my grandfather's ashes when the time came and my father has decided to make his own...

My personal feelings are that at the end of the day the container matters very little. The memories of the people that have gathered to remember the departed are the truly telling thing. Years from now people will be talking of those memories and not of a box.

I do hope you and your family are doing as well as can be expected.

Chris

Thank you Chris and Tom.

We did OK with the black plastic box although it would have been nice if it was a nice wood. The normal cardboard box was just a shock, when they said the remains would be returned to us in a box that could be used for internment, we just expected something a little more. We both figured it would be made of wood or plastic.
