A retired Captain in the Gurkhas told me the notch was- ahem- "anatomical in nature" (I kid you not!). He like the kuk' as an all round tree-beater a great deal..
I think Dan posted to say the c.g. would be sterile sadly..

I kind of agree guys- but at least the base of the squared choil is radiused a bit to dissipate the stress. I think the squarer choil is a homage to older (classic?) bowies, but the yard makes working knives... You are correct! I have always preferred the look of the classic and more traditional Bowies and we did radius all junctures in the choil to eliminate stress risers. When destructive testing was done on the Dog Father, the blade broke right at the vise where it is supposed to break and the traditional style choil performed just like we had hoped it would! Just wait until you see how far it went before finally going to that big Scrap Yard in the sky!!! Dan

Round it out with a Dremel!! Be careful if you do! Eric mentioned that a Dremel can damage the temper. So, don’t let it get too hot!

Buy it, use it, love it, then buy another one. Don't try to second guess the engineers. That's my motto.

There are several reasons for the choil. It makes it easier to sharpen, a spanish notch is supposed to be usefull in a fight(not sure how) and it helps make the blade better at delicate work by allowing you to choke up on the blade. Don't let the classic bowies fool you they were serious using and fighting knives.
