am i the only one that thinks it looks a little odd, maybe even a litle impractical? i am sure there is a good reason for it, but i am at a loss for as to what.

I'm pretty sure the only reason the Bowie has a choil is to reduce stress on the blade. a finger choil would be a bit impractical on a chopper of this size.

The small radius at the back of the squared off choil creates another stress riser.
If it is weaker than the blade just in front of the choil, it's bad news.
If it is not weaker, it's fine but it does look funky.
If it has any purpose other than cosmetics, I would love to hear about it.
Arf arf arf... That's my other dog impression.

I kind of agree guys- but at least the base of the squared choil is radiused a bit to dissipate the stress. I think the squarer choil is a homage to older (classic?) bowies, but the yard makes working knives...

I don't cut with the Choil, so I wouldn't care if it were a triangle!!!

I figured it was to put their own variation on Busse and SR choils, so it’s similar, but their own style. I think round would be more comfortable though.

that was my thinking. i dig that this is not going to be the scalpel of the pack, but the squared choil even looks funny to me. all those nice smooth flowing lines and square choil just doesn't jive in the havarti book of feng shui.
that said, though, i will get one regardless. gotta love any hardcore knife from the clan that's bigger than a battle mistress. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Khukris have a hindu symbol near the handle to prevent blood from running down the handle making it slippery. It would be cool to see a similar feature on the Bowie... the outline of the logo carved where the coil is. Not very practical though...

I wonder if they are going to be sterile or not. I DO have the feeling that they will be sterile.
Peter: That is a most interesting bit of info. I learn something new every day!
