Very true. Knives snd outdoor equipment were definitely Easier to enjoy when I lived on/next to places where I could toss on a day pack and go spend a day or 2 in the woods Shooting competition and guns were my main draw after that but having a family reduces the time I have for travel and the sharp rise in ammo/reloading costs has diminished the joy in it.
Now I find most of my joy in my wife & 2 children. Just got my little guy his first sleeping bag yesterday lol.
Mountain biking is a nice release and I’m fortunate enough to live 15-25min away from 3 trail networks one my dad started back in the early 90s.
Any day I'm above the grass and I'm not a zombie is a good day! JYD#138

Often when we go somewhere the General will drive while I look at the farms and fields, thinking about how our country was years ago. I love the rural life and feel like this is the way folks should be able to live, and the way our nation once was. At one time the U.S. was 98 percent rural and 2 percent urban ; now the figures are reversed.

Simpler times. Life was harder, but there didn’t seem to be as many “complications” as there today. There probably was but they were different then.

Those of you who’ve been around a while have heard me say this before. The police have NO constitutional duty to protect the individual citizen. Here is a video that Tells you why and the reason behind that statement. Teaser alert. YES, it did come from the Supreme Court of the United States. https://youtu.be/FaOrnnhdSVo

Yep Gonzalez V Castle Rock cemented that one in the USSC.
That fact is though in a 30-year career I've only been there when violent action was taken against an innocent victim a handful of times. Stuff happens, and a call is made, and travel happens. I have saved more than a few lives after the fact.
The best advice is to avoid going to bad places, doing stupid things, don't hang out with people doing stupid things, and be prepared to self rescue. Occasionally none of that will matter. But 99% of the time those things prevent most people from being a victim.

Yup! Exactly what MB said. That being said, we still need to be ready to provide our own protection as best we can.
Keep your eyes and ears open and your brain engaged. The most important safety device is located between your ears.

Agreed Skunk, Your brain is your best tool. But being armed, trained, proficient and educated goes a long way.
