Randy, what does the Sheriff's office use ? I thought that for most departments they use Motorola walkies.

For as much hate as they get. Baofeng aren't bad for a beginner HAM radio. They ate cheap, easy to program using chirp and have surprisingly good range with the right antenna.

Nothing to listen but require a ham license to broadcast. Free test prep and the testing for the license is inexpensive.

Here our county is using (or did when I retired), Kenwood. I’m just looking for a set to use in case our cell service goes out and Patty and I might be a Mile or so apart (which rarely happens). Or if I need to go check on something around the house. Weave had a couple times when some weird sounds came from outside at night and I had to go check them out. Once there had been someone around. You could see the tracks in the dew, and the local cop tracked to a street over where they apparently got in a car. That’s why I keep a 21 round pistol with a white light next to us while we’re sleeping.

Oh and don’t forget to check up in trees around your house as well!
