I was not aware of the "tunnels" but I know of big caves that are used for storage near Joplin. Also heard of "Underground Springfield" that has been advertised on television as a fun place to visit.

I know there were a lot of caves that were planned for use for civil defense around WWII. One was a contender for NORAD. We toured it a several years ago.
