As opposed to a sword, I would rather have a slightly smaller -Ruck- type blade, but for single hand use.

Think - Yard Wakizashi.

I would prefer a tough, nimble and quick blade that is about 15in. - 16in. in length.
If using the full size Res-C handles at 5 inches, the OAL would be about 20in - 21in.

I would personally prefer satin finish.

I would also love the traditional convex grind of a Wakizashi, but flat grind would still be good.

INFI is too rich for my blood. The Busse Kensei & Ruck were just out of my price range.

But, if we could have a reasonable price SR77 Ruck that was a little smaller, I would be all over it.

I think this would be a very versatile and functional tool.

Anyone else???

Of course you just described the BR Northwind, except the res-c handle. 17.25" blade with 5.5" handle IIRC. My favorite blades and seemingly popular topic for me tonight. [Linked Image from ramanon.com]

I'd definitely get a Scrapyard, esp. if it had the LOGO!!

I actually have a Northwind (and a Golok).

I think what I have described above would be more appealing to me than either the Northwind or the Golok.

I like the idea of Res-C for grip, feel comfort, etc. But, for a 15in to 16in blade, I am a little leary of the much smaller tang used for the Res-C handles. Full tang and micarta seems a little more ideal. But, if Dan were to say it would be strong and tough enough, then I would be all over the Res-C.

I prefer the handle (grip), balance and handling of the Golok over the Northwind.

I also prefer the quality of finish on my Golok. I love Bark River knives. I have way too many, but my Northwind looks like it was ground by a blind man. All of my other Barkies have pretty nice or very nice grind quality.

When the grind is decent, I love the full convex grind!!!

The Northwind is a little longer than I prefer and the Golok is a little shorter than I would like.

The Golok is very quick and agile. The Northwind is not as quick.

If I choke up to the front of the Northwind grip, the balance and handling are much better. But, then the grip isn't just right.

Of course toughness is very important for this type of blade, but Balance, handling, grip, feel, speed and similar characteristics are also very important to me for this type of blade.

I would also prefer a blade that is shaped a little more like a Wakizashi than the Northwind is.

I am sure the Scrap Ruck Kensei as drawn above or similar would be more to my liking...... with the logo of course!

You choke up on your NW???

Mine are the sharpest blades I own, including other Barkies. I don't want my fingers anywhere near that edge. About the only thing I don't like is the handle can get kinda slick. I tried to get Mike to redo the handle on mine so they were more like the golok handle. It has a little bit of a guard and I really want that with the NW's. I don't know if I'd trust the Res-C handle, but it would prolly be OK. Textured G-10 would be my choice though.

I don't like the fact that the Northwind has no guard of any type .

The handle is long enough that I can hold it in the back or at the front of the micarta with about 1.5 inches of hand placement. The first 1.5 inch of the blade in front of the micarta is not sharpened on mine. But, I do feel there is too much potential for an accident.

It may feel secure enough at times, but like you mentioned, it CAN be slippery and there is the potential to strike something in such a way that the blade could be forced back and cause my hand to slide up a VERY sharp blade .

One accident like that would probably end my ability to use ANY knife with that hand .

I don't like to think about that!

I am trying to come up with a better option than the Northwind!

Textured G-10 would be my choice though.

--------------------------------------------------------

Textured G-10 or micarta both sound fine to me as long as the handle is contoured well.

The larger Res-C handle is a good size and shape.

The palm swell, beak, pommel shape and swell, etc. all very good.

You'll notice that the one I use has a lanyard. It's not there to keep me from dropping it. It's just short enough to keep my hand off the blade if it sticks in something.

I would have to have two of them. And then a rig to cross them on my back. I agree with the guard concerns. Satin finish and maybe another 4-5 inches in length.
