The knife looks cool with the naked blade. You did a good job.

Thanks guys. I'm sure that I could always send it to Dan and pay to have it re-handled. I have never asked so don't know the price on this. But, like I said, this here DF be a user so i am not concerned yet. But it would be nice to know if re-handling is a possibility and the cost. I imagine as long as they have the handles on hand...

If I ever messed up the handle of one of my dogs beyond repair I would be tempted to make a nice custom handle out of some fancy wood or elk antler.
Imagine a DF with a polished blade and an Elk antler handle. It would sure look great but it would also still be as tough as a DFCG. I am surprised we don't see more mods like this as Scrappers are cheap enough to make great projects.
If you wanted something traditional but still really tough you could make a nice maple handle with blued steel. Maybe with a coffin or dogbone shaped handle.
I love traditional looking bowies or an S6 would be good as well. Now I am kicking myself for not jumping on the stripped S6 that was for sale on a canadian site.

Are those grain lines or grind lines?!

Those lines are under the coatings on most of the Busse family knives.

They are only on the "flat" sides of the knife. They are not on the grind areas.

I am pretty sure that Busse (Swamp and Scrapyard) all use the same (apparently) high tech equipment to heat treat and test for hardness.

However, I am sure the treatment process for the different steels (INFI, SR101 & SR77) all very a little.

I have two theories that are based on other information I have read ... or ... I just made up the information and I will claim I created the theory based on information I have read because I can't remember....

Theory 1:

Busse (and kin) have a machine that tests the whole length of the blade for proper hardness. The machine marks the blade in a zig-zag pattern as it is testing for hardness. Maybe the blade is fed through such a machine (??).

Maybe you have seen the hardness test mark on a Puma knife. Puma does a hardness test near the guard area of their knives. The test makes a little divot hole.

------

Theory 2:

The marks are from a machine that is part of the Transverse Wave Tempering process. I can't go into any more theory about this as it is top secret.

------

The marks a bugger to get out if you are removing the coatings from Busse, Swamp Rat or Scrapyard knives.

.

I like those theories, certainly food for thought... kinda makes me curious about what's under that coating on a lot of other kinds & brands of knives too.

DN - looks good! I melted the front edge of the handle on my DM and shaped it a little so that it would sheath easier. I really like ResC.

Wow, Knifeguy. Your theories are much better than mine. I just figured the workers got bored and doodled on the blades! My DF just has a "Z" on the tang where a tang stamp would go, but the Dumpster Mutt had deep scratches like DN's Dog Father. Took a lot of grinding to remove.

I had the same idea along the lines of doodling, but I had the same Z on a few of the Rats that I stripped, Camp Tramps, Battle Rats and a couple of Ratwielers. I had a vision of some worker at the shop with a Zorro complex.

Z's on Rats and Dogs, Zorro's been busy!
