Now for the special item as promised to you Dogs. The first ScrapYard Challenge Coin. This coin is roughly the size of a silver dollar. It is marked on the front with the number of the coin and the back is marked with the year 2007

“The History of the Challenge Coin goes something like this:”
During World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly formed flying squadrons. In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze and presented them to his unit.

Shortly after acquiring the medallions, a pilots’ aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except for the small leather pouch around his neck that contained the coin. He did escape; however, he was without personal identification.

He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners and one of his French captors recognized the squadron insignia on the medallion. They delayed his execution long enough for him to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him they gave him a bottle of wine.

To ensure that all members carried their coin at all times - a challenger would ask to see the coin. If the challenged could not produce a medallion, they were required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged them. If the challenged member produced a medallion, then the challenging member was required to pay for the drink. This tradition continues.

For those Dogs that will reach Junk Yard Dog status on the forum by having at least 1000 post will receive this coin with their JYD number on it free of charge. I will accept those Dogs who make JYD status by 12 midnight on July 4th, 2007.

[Linked Image from i134.photobucket.com]

For those who do not make this status, the coins (with random numbers) will be made available though the ScrapYard web site for $19.95, (shipping and handling is included).

This is a limited run with numbers running as high as 300. There are 15 coins struck with the number “000” which will be given to family members and employees of ScrapYard. All 300 coins hold intrinsic collectors value since no other coins with these graphics and or year will be produced.

Get in on this so you are not embarrassed and do not have to buy me the drink of choice…Blue goes for $50 bucks a shot. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Coldone, I have never thought about a virtual employee...it may have merit.

Since I have been out for a few days, can you update the list and track it through July 4th?

Once we hit midnight on July 4th the free Coins ends. I will then post instructions on how each of the JYD's get their coins.

Let me know

Dan

No problem Dan! It is up to date as of souped at JYD#32! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Next nearest JYD potential is scrappy at 575.

For the ordering directions, will it include the step "order your DFLE" ? I just told the wife I get a free thing with my next knife! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Maybe we could get to 40 JYD's if some of the Dog's get busy in the next 7 days

Well I was hoping for a JYD only knife but the coins are very nice. I am looking forward to mine. How about a run for those of us who are Scrapyard evangalists? I will have to celebrate the coins announcment with some Chivas.
I am more into the blends than the single malts.

Awesome!

Do I count as an employee for pushing SYKCO blades on everyone I know? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
you have to trick the wife some how?

Dan

This is a very cool gift and a very cool tradition. I have a LOOOOONG way to go. I hope I make it.

Dan

Dan, First off I want to thank both you and Patti!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> I think that I have tears.... Naw it's sweat. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

This is what I have hoped for for a very long time as I am a fan of such things! I will carry it with honor!

The two clubs that I belong to have something where a flag is produced to carry on an expedition.

The Adventurers Club here in Chicago has two flags made which are both carried and photographed when at your destination. These have to be real expeditions not just a cruise and you have to be going someplace very remote. It is a true honor to carry such flags as peopel such as Admiral Byrd, Roosevelt and even astronauts have carried them. Upon return there is a flag dinner where you give a lecture and one of the flags is then hung from the ceiling with others that are very old and tattered. The other you get to keep and display. I have had the honor of carrying two flags to Mt. Kasigau in Kenya back in 2002 and now have my flags here in Chicago.

The Explorers clubs flag is carried by everyone. You fill out a form and the board has to pass the motion and you get a numbered flag. The thing about this is there are many flags with many serial numbers and they have all been carried from outer space to the deepest ocean. There is one on the space station as we speak. These are flags that you carry and then return to the club and the best part is that the flag you have just carried is a flag that already went on another expedition with someone else, even famous explorers. I have yet to do carry one of their flags.

The reason that I am saying this is because YOUR coin will be carried with honor on my expeditions, when I go on them and I will photograh them at my destinations!!! I will carry this coin with great pride!

Thank you Dan and Patti!!!

Dan

That's pretty cool DM. I've never heard of flag societies, but I love the concept.

They are organizations that promot science, exploration and adventure. The flags are traditions which National Geographic does as well. I is quite interesting.

Here is a link to the Explorers Club: www.explorers.org. The Chicago Adventurers Club site is down right now.

Here are examples that I could find.

Adventurers Club Flag and club lounge:

To me, this coin is the equivalent to carrying the flag, only on a more private level.

What are the weight of those chips? I have a set of 14.5 gram chips that I really like, but those blow mine away!

Ah, this was one of those FREE giveaway contests that Dan really showed his love in before he really knew just how successful he was going to become. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

FREE CHALLANGE COINS to ANY Dog who hit 1,000 posts by a given date. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I was and always have been a poster of few posts, but I try to make mine have a point rather than just the next number in a post to JYD status.

I was the dead last Junk Yard Dog. Number 44. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

After me all others paid $19.95 plus S&H.

What a passion Dan has had since the very beginning of his dream... Scrap Yard Knife Company. Now, he has sold knives all over the world. He has Dogs in The Yard who post daily from all over the globe.

And NOT FOR AN INSTANT has he forgot what made him get to this level of success.

A work ethic like a family business needs to survive.

A product that is unequalled in its ability to absorb damage in abusive situations.

The price to Performance Ratio he stated in his Mission statement.

You newer Dogs, take just about 90 seconds on the first page and read The Mission Statement Dan Busse gave in 2006. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

As true today as it was when in his head before ever on paper. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

Enjoy this RE-POST of days of Yore and Lore in The Yard.

It has ALWAYS been this frickin cool to be A DOG <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

OOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GRRRRRRRRRUUUUFFFFF RUFFFFF. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
Dogs eat Rats!
Dogs catch and kill Hogs!!
Don't mess with The Dogs!!!

Peace.

I ordered one with my two War Dogs.

Got #153.

Its hard to believe that 300 were made in 2007 and now 4 years later there are still some remaining.

I did find out they are sent in random order so I don't kknow how many are left at this time.

Dog tags is something that I think EVERY Dog would want for their toys, Specially if they could be ordered with our name and or JYD number or even membership number!

But Just plain old Scrapyard Knife Co would work! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Dogs tags just seem like they would make sense seeing as Scrapyard uses a Dog as a logo <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Good times always here in The Yard!!

But just in case Dan needs a new idea, I believe the Dog Tag is the way to go.

Hogs have them. And they never register with the county for rabies etc.

Dogs ALWAYS have tags to show that they are in compliance with the law and proof that they are cared for. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Dan cares for his Dogs like no owner I know of. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Let's do it then!! C'mon Dan...Yard Dog Tags on a beaded chain. How cool would that be? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

Peace,
David.
