even though i am partial to the 870 You could always buy the bayonet mount for the 870. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
When you care enough to use only the best...stick'em with a SKYCO knife.

I'm hoping to score a decent imaging program so I can post some pics of my stuff. I'd love to post a pics on my boomstick. Yes, I really call my shotgun that. Right now all my images are huge and it'd be rude on my part to post them. Jerry, try "Image Resizer Powertoy" it's a microsoft utility on their site. -free- I use it and it's great.

Look at your likely engagement zone. If you've got a lot of houses in your area or family members in seperate rooms, then I'd just stick birdshot in the tube and wouldn't worry about staggering your rounds. More importantly than that, make an invasion plan. Go over with your family members what you're going to do should someone invade your home. Our's is simple stay in the bedroom and fight it out there until the situation dictates otherwise.
There's really no benefit in my opinion to stagering rounds, cause when you need birdshot then you end up with a slug, or buck. Pick a load and stick to it. Plus in the heat of an engagement are you really going to remember how you loaded your rounds and what's next when you pump it? probably not.
Personally, I run 3 inch 12 pellet 00 buck in my 870. Then again I'm really out in the county and I'm not to concerned about my neighbors since they're far enough away, then again so are the police. It's only me and my wife and she'll be right behind me.
To carry extra rounds I carry a Maxpedition velociter bag with enough shells to hold out for some time. In that bag I carry a mixture of slugs and buck. The shells are segreated so there's no issue with mixing up my rounds. However, the bag is something I grab only if I need to leave the confines of my house and walk the exterior. The bag also has additional pockets for lights and such.
The only real advantages slugs offer are ranger over buck shot. Getting hit with a 1 ounce slug is most likely going to ruin your day. However, I'd imagine that it'd be pretty hard to justify a 100 yard self defense shot to the police.
Have fun with your shotty. Heaven knows I love mine.
jerry All very good advice. I like the older Remington 3in 2x4's. (not sure they make them any more) Nice for in house and having good neighbors who live to close <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> Dan

Knife party, Nice Gun, I love big-5 too.
Thanks Jerrwhy, that is some good shotgun advice, I have thought about making my 870 a little more home defence-ish. shorter barrle mainly, I'd love a surefire forend but at $250 it is less apealing.

However, I'd imagine that it'd be pretty hard to justify a 100 yard self defense shot to the police. jerry How is self defense defined in the US. Here in South Africa it is fairly strict, your life must be in immediate danger, this excludes shooting through a door just because a perp is on the other side. Even home invasion is more difficult to argue for a man than for a woman, and somebody loading your tv onto your truck is not considered self defense unless he/she shots at you at the same time, because if they are leaving (even if it is with your valuables) then your life cannot be in danger anymore. I'm not going to argue the point of this law because it gives an advantage to the perps at the expense of law abiding citizens but it is the law after all and you don't want to end up in prison because you fought for your tv. I would also follow Jerry's advice and go for a lighter load, at close range it won't matter too much anyways. By the way, that shotgun with the bayonet rocks. roger

From what i read the only way u can engage some1 is if you feel that your life is in danger or the lives of your family members. 90% of the time when a perp enters a house and hears the sound of a round being cycled into the chamber that is enough to change there mind LOL.

> KnifeParty, Congrats! Mossberg's 500/590s will serve you well. Shoot Everything in it.. OO, slugs, birdshot.. to get a feel for how the different loads perform, pattern at different ranges, and how recoil feels with each. Tip: with the heavier loads.. don't put your cheek on the stock <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> > Jerrwhy, Great advice! It *is* hard to count rounds! I usually stick a handful of FMJs at the bottom of my spare mags.. if I don't tag all the baddies within 15-rounds.. i figure the survivors have probably taken cover by then <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> or by then.. i woulda fought my way to my rifle.. so's i can tag 'em behind walls too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> > bodhi_, How is self defense defined in the US. Here in South Africa it is fairly strict .. this excludes shooting through a door just because a perp is on the other side .. somebody loading your tv onto your truck is not considered self defense unless he/she shots at you at the same time.. bodhi_, Depends on the state.. some require you to "retreat", some don't, some say you simply need to "fear for your life".. blah blah. My plan = My word + Dead perp(s) = my story is the only story. You're right though.. different laws will affect different situations.. but we still gotta prepare for it the best we can <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Great score! Pistol grip w/ collapsable stock time! You can't have those in CA though can you?
Anyways, nice looking shotgun!
