Nice scattergun. Either bayo will work fine. However, you may be best served by an M9 bayonet. Personally, I'd recommend a good set of ghost ring sights on the beast for slug work, and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the tip jerry. That will be taken care of next check. I hope to take her out to the range maybe this saturday. Bought some 00 buck and some bird shot.

I have heard that 00 buck kicks like a mule. Im gonna be honnest i have never shot a shottie before. I do plan on picking up some #1 buck and maybe some slugs.

What is a good target round?

I've never had any problems with kicking. Just hold it good and tight against your sholder and you'll be fine... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

A shotgun kicks like any other rifle. It'll do what it does. Put the stock in the meat of your shoulder between your arm and shoulder and lean into it and you'll do just fine. Knoxx makes some good stocks, you'll do just fine if you go with their comp stock. In fact I'm thinking of putting one on my 870.

You may want to check out some of the tactical 00 buck with the flite control wad. It kicks less, doesn't give up that much in range and keeps a tighter pattern.

If you're going to be using this for home defense duties get a good light as you'll want to identify your target before engaging. If over penetration is a concern look at some number 6 or 7 shot. At typical ranges inside the home it's probably more devastating than buck shot and you don't have to worry about it going through multiple walls.

Looks like you got a great deal, Knifeparty. I always wanted a 590. I own two 500s in 20 ga that I use for home defense. Mossbergs are proven reliable pump shotguns. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Thanks for the useful info jerry.

over penetration is something i have taken into consideration. I have read that birdshot will not penetrate walls and most folks load 1 or 2 rounds of birdshot then the rest is like #1 buck followed by A slug or two at the end for good measure.

Ill make sure to buy some number 7 2morrow. As for a tac light im already looking into a good one as we speak.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Please keep them coming if possible.

Nice looking shotgun. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'd use the M7 bayonet......only because I'm cheap and it'll stick people just the same. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

When you care enough to use only the best...stick'em with a SKYCO knife.

Look at your likely engagement zone. If you've got a lot of houses in your area or family members in seperate rooms, then I'd just stick birdshot in the tube and wouldn't worry about staggering your rounds. More importantly than that, make an invasion plan. Go over with your family members what you're going to do should someone invade your home. Our's is simple stay in the bedroom and fight it out there until the situation dictates otherwise.

There's really no benefit in my opinion to stagering rounds, cause when you need birdshot then you end up with a slug, or buck. Pick a load and stick to it. Plus in the heat of an engagement are you really going to remember how you loaded your rounds and what's next when you pump it? probably not.

Personally, I run 3 inch 12 pellet 00 buck in my 870. Then again I'm really out in the county and I'm not to concerned about my neighbors since they're far enough away, then again so are the police. It's only me and my wife and she'll be right behind me.

To carry extra rounds I carry a Maxpedition velociter bag with enough shells to hold out for some time. In that bag I carry a mixture of slugs and buck. The shells are segreated so there's no issue with mixing up my rounds. However, the bag is something I grab only if I need to leave the confines of my house and walk the exterior. The bag also has additional pockets for lights and such.

The only real advantages slugs offer are ranger over buck shot. Getting hit with a 1 ounce slug is most likely going to ruin your day. However, I'd imagine that it'd be pretty hard to justify a 100 yard self defense shot to the police.

Have fun with your shotty. Heaven knows I love mine.

I'm hoping to score a decent imaging program so I can post some pics of my stuff. I'd love to post a pics on my boomstick. Yes, I really call my shotgun that. Right now all my images are huge and it'd be rude on my part to post them.
