I really like my AR a lot. I just would not bet my life on it. I plan on getting a new extractor, to see if that helps.
My friend's mini's have never choked. Of course, our conditions in the US are slightly better then some that the Armed forces need to deal with, but I live here. Plus, with a semi, reliability need to be key.

I also like the heavier cartridge, for rogue animals. Ones that are merely annoying, I throw pebbles at until they leave. Sometimes, a bad pun works, as well.

I have a Mini-14 with an ARS heavy barrel. It is not quite as accurate as either of my Ar-15s, but much better than it was. I agree that the modified Garand action is more reliable than Stoner's design. I have read that Ruger has redone the Mini-14 series and improved accuracy. They are nice little rifles.

It was the Germans in WWII that started the assault weapon phenomenon, not the NRA.
I guess a lot depends on the unit. Here in Jersey, the guard does call them assault rifles. They do it in NY, as well.
It was Colonel Rex Applegate who cleared up the definitions for me, when we met in Philiadelphia. If anyone knows, he did.
The Army constantly gets things wrong, unfortunately. I once attended a survival course, where the soldiers were told to melt their boots and use the steel shanks as knives, if they needed knives. When I asked if it would not be easier to just have a swiss army knife, i was told that if you needed a knife, the army would issue it. You did not need any gear that was unissued, ever.
The Armed Forces tend just to do as told, and repeat as trained.

Yes, the MP44 Sturmgewehr. My favorite "Storm Rifle" is the AK-47. I have a Yugoslavian model.

sold my FN-FAL .308 last year..
kinda heavy & unwieldy in the city, but great for open range.

Looking to replace it with a .308 bolt-action "Scout Rifle" a la Jeff Cooper.. but i prefer iron sights. I hike around in the desert a lot.. so Lightweight is important to me.. w/ long range punch.

I'm also looking for a "Backpack" Assault Rifle for hiking.. been lookin hard at the 50-round capacity FN P90 in 5.7x28mm (err.. PS90 w/ civilian-length barrel i suppose)

Still on the fence about selling my AR-15..
i'm too sober right now to think about it.

The "assault rifle" i REGRET selling most.. was my trusty 'ol Russian SKS w/ 10-round stripper clips.. i abused the Hell out of it.. hardly ever cleaned it.. ran the cheapest fodder i could find.. but that thing went Bang every time.. NEVER jammed!
:: i raise a toast to it now.. wherever it is.. ::

I have a SKS Paratrooper. Takes AK mags. I love that weapon. I like my AR as well. I am seriously considering a DPMS .308 AR bases rifle. Vic, you may be confusing "assault rifle" with "assualt weapon" which is an entirely fictional creation of the media and gun haters.

I am well aware of the media creation, "Assault Weapon". The definitions provided in earlier posts of assault rifle are correct. I just never heard the M-16 rifle referred to as one when I was in the Army or Air Force. A select fire rifle of medium power (more than a pistol cartridge, less than a high powered rifle cartridge) with a detachable high capacity magazine is what is called an assault rifle, and the M-16 fits that definition for sure. In my mind, the semi-auto only civilian versions are not true assault rifles, but BATF may see things differently. Now a battle rifle, to me, is any military rifle from a 1903 Springfield to an M-16. I guess "Battle rifle" in this thread only refers to the heavier caliber military rifles, like the Enfield, M1 Garand, M14, etc. Whatever we call them, the .30 calibers seem to be making a comeback. I have always wondered why the Army never just converted the .308 to the .243. That would have given them a flatter shooting, lower recoil round that could have easily been adapted to the M14 design. It would have better power and range than the .223. But they didn't ask me.
