I like that MP-38... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> Really solid piece of work too. I got to play with one. They build them on old germany machinery.

i'd love a VEPR. i'd also like to handle the new smith wesson ar15.

What was it that you did not like about it, Bramel? How is yours different? Not much different....put a smith enterprizes Vortex flash suppressor on it differnt scope mount and a custom camo paintjob. I didn't like the socom, because it's a half inch too short for Canadian law....makes it a restricted firearm up here...you can only use those at an approved range. Mine, is a half inch longer....I can use it for hunting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks, Bramel. I was hoping you would tell me something was horribly wrong with the SOCCOM 16 so I would have an excuse not to buy one. I am still torn between it and the FN FAL shorty.

Looking to replace it with a .308 bolt-action "Scout Rifle" a la Jeff Cooper.. but i prefer iron sights. I hike around in the desert a lot.. so Lightweight is important to me.. w/ long range punch. ![[Linked Image from upload.wikimedia.org]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/df/Scout-1-.gif) . :: <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Savage reintroduced their Scout rifle this year or late last year and it has ghost ring sights. I have heard about zero about it in the gun mags though.

I am well aware of the media creation, "Assault Weapon". The definitions provided in earlier posts of assault rifle are correct. I just never heard the M-16 rifle referred to as one when I was in the Army or Air Force. A select fire rifle of medium power (more than a pistol cartridge, less than a high powered rifle cartridge) with a detachable high capacity magazine is what is called an assault rifle, and the M-16 fits that definition for sure. In my mind, the semi-auto only civilian versions are not true assault rifles, but BATF may see things differently. Now a battle rifle, to me, is any military rifle from a 1903 Springfield to an M-16. I guess "Battle rifle" in this thread only refers to the heavier caliber military rifles, like the Enfield, M1 Garand, M14, etc. Whatever we call them, the .30 calibers seem to be making a comeback. I have always wondered why the Army never just converted the .308 to the .243. That would have given them a flatter shooting, lower recoil round that could have easily been adapted to the M14 design. It would have better power and range than the .223. But they didn't ask me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> +1 on .243 M1A!!

Some thoughts:
Curious to hear what reliability problems you are having with AR. I have well over 2500 rds through my Bushmaster (1000 at a time without cleaning in 4 days to see if it would take it and to prove Colt brainwashed instructor wrong) and about 500 through my 99% Colt build with no problems. My PD has several Colt and DPMS ARs as patrol rifles and I have not seen any trouble.
My only problem with the Mini 14 is finding reliable and economical magazines. the new ghost rings actually seem better to me.
I didn't like that compenastor or the fact that it took shorter parts on the Socom. I bought a M1A Scout instead. 44mag.com was selling government contract 20 rd mags for the M1A at good prices if anyone is interested.(I bought 10.)
