You can also custom order a hawk from fort turner. I got one that is basically a 1.25 pound trapper hawk with a slight upsweep at the tip for better throwing and a more pronounced and curved beard that comes to a sharp point. Will post pics when able. This is a sweet hawk. The 1.25 figure is just what happens to work best for me in terms of quickness and throwing. The only thing that kept me from getting the H&B spike hawk is that when I called them they said the spike was not hardened and tempered. Also I found a local smith that made those ball peen hawks for around 60 bucks. Sweet!

[Holy crap! I actually found one like this that is inexpensive and doesn't seem to be fit only for display!

I just have to decide if I can live with a french axe. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> J/K

France was named after the weapon of the Franks, the fanchesca. I'm not sure about the spelling, but it was a throwing axe much feared by their enemies.

I'm familiar with the franchesca design. It has that weird sort of down swept, over the top head that I imagine gives it impact characteristics like an ice axe. This is more of a boarding axe, though.

The french style axes were actually used in the US and on the navy ships of the day.

I just finished (I am never really finished as I always fiddle with stuff)my hawk bluing project. It turned out really well for what a quick and dirty job I did.
I would recommend a CS hawk if you can buy ti from a store where you can inspect it first so you get a good one even if it costs more than over the net.

Here is how it turned out.

I could have done more polishing and fiishing but for a simple hawk that is going to get beat up this is fine. It really cleaned up nicely.

Your CS hawk looks a lot better than my painted CS hawk. Good job, Unsub.

Thanks guys I am very pleased with how the hawk turned out. I think the blued steel looks so much better and more traditional than the painted one. The steel works very well for bluing. Some modern steel with cromium and other alloys won't take the blue but the CS steel went a rich dark color with very little effort.

Stabbyjoe,
that is a really nice hawk. thanks for posting the picture.

Unsub,
good blueing job!
I noticed the sting in your picture. I am currently carrying a CRKT version of it. I need to come up with a better sheath. I really want to like this one, but it is not happening.

Thanks guys, I got an awesome sheath from Eric for my Sting and it made a HUGE difference. I would get the Fort Turner or H&B hawk unless I could actually check out the CS before I bought it. Some are much better than others.
