I would love to see a wood handled hawk from SYKC!
If it is doable for Ranger knies it could be for SYKC as well.
I would like to see a smaller norse or bearded hawk with a no hammer or spike but a good solid back end that could be used as a hammer.
I also like a triangle shaped poll where it comes to a rounded point like a doctors reflex hammer.
A small head on a long handle is more challenging to use both as a weapon and cutting tool but is light and incredibly effective.

When it comes to combat with edged weapons speed is much more important than strength.

I read when the guy who made Magua's (the bad guy in Last of the Mohicans)
hawk the movie guys had him make one with a head a third bigger so it looked right for the movie. Magua's hawk in the movie is still quite a bit smaller than
many hawks on the market today.

Most Vikings carried a axe identical to a hawk rather than a sword.

Well I finished stripping and gringing my CS Norse flat. I really did luck out on a nice one considering how poor the CS quality control can be. It did take a lot of grinding and several belts to get it all nice and sanded flat.
Now I need to hand finish it to blend all the different edges and blue the steel.
I used a belt grinder like Horn Dogs but a bit bigger to do most of the grunt work
all the while being careful not to let it spoil the temper.

I even got a really nice handle with great figure for hickory and exactly the kind of straight vertical grain you want for strength.
The right kind of Hickory is as much stronger than the next strongest wood(maple)
as S7 is to the next strongest steel. I am sure everyone remembers the bar graph.

I was thinking I might strip and polish it before I stick it on. What do I do? Bang it into position and then soak it in oil?

Leave it with the forged look. If you strip and polish it it will look more modern.

As for the handle, I guess you will have to slide it on and tamp it until it is tight.

I got it more for it's BA quality rather than traditional styling, but I don't have the inclination to really polish it and I don't the it would look all that great just stripped. I'm just going to assemble it. What I will do is put a lanyard hole in the end and cord wrap the bottom.

Like they always say, "Some assembly required, batteries not included." <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
