We are watching Man vs Wild, for the first time. The guy peed on his shirt, then wrapped it around his head for a fetching survival party hat.
My wife now wants to know how often I pee on myself when I go camping with the guys.

As often as possible, but tell her when you go camping with the guys that you wear your buds pee soaked SYKCO t-shirt.

There was another episode when he is in Kimberly Australia when he drinks a canteen of his own pee. Jack Pot!

Good thing he has the camera crew there. If he broke his leg or something doing all that running in rough terrain, he'd be finished. It is good TV, though.

You have obvisouly not seen the episode where he drinks half a canteen of his urine because he has no water. This accellerates dehydration which is not good in a survival situation. It's the Austrailia episode. Not sure that was very good advice, but then I am not an ex-special forces guy and I have never tackled Everest so....

I tried watching him for a while, but was not overly impressed. At least Les Stroud - a.k.a. Survivorman is a bit more tolerable.

Yep that was kind of funny.

It Reminded me of a world war 1 gas mask you had to urinate into to make it work.

The kids got a kick out of it.

He is really bad. The choices he makes in survival situations are very poor. There is some good knowledge from time to time though. Les is better.

well i guess the moral of the story is if you are going to wear clothes soaked in pee, it's better if it's yours.

Decent looking knife... Way high price.

I am VERY confident, I own many knives that would more than offer a better bang for the buck. Obviously, including Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat knives.

I have only heard a little about the RWL powdered steel. I assume it being new and exotic makes it expensive.. along with having a psudo celebrity name on the knife.

But, what are the characteristics of RWL? Tough? Brittle? Hold an edge? Easy or hard to sharpen?

.... I started to ramble again and had to delete a bunch of thoughts on blade steels. Been there done that.

Just curious about RWL.

See, thing about that knife is; I can't imagine it being any tougher than SY blades even if it had the same beefy dimensions. It isn't, so it's going to be weaker right off the bat. Edge retention? Are you telling me a guy who drinks his own pee won't find a way to sharpen a knife? I would imagine that this blade is a better slicer than sayyy a Yard Guard, but guess what? When I get ahold whatever animal I'm eating, I'm not going to care how well it cuts medallions. The raggedy steak is coming off the bone and then I'm going to ram a stick through it and cook it. I'm not out there julianning carrots.

Well let me tell you, if you have not jullianed carrots in a survival situation, you don't know what you are missing.

Stabby,

That was more or less the point I was making in the ramble I deleted. I started going into the "possible" merits of certain exotic steels for super thin and super sharp kitchen knives, but feel that a knife that is very tough and can hold a decent edge is always better for "Survival Situations" than a knife that holds an incredibly sharp edge, but isn't sufficiently tough.

I know S30v is prone to chipping. I assume ZDP-189 is prone to chipping (never used it or owned it).

I am "guessing" RWL might be along the lines of ZDP - just curious if it is... or not.

Either SR-77 or SR-101 would both, IMO, be more than sufficiently great for a survival knife. They are both VERY tough and able to be sufficiently sharp.
So, regardless of how tough or not RWL may or may not be, I would not justify the price for that knife.

$350 GBP = $712 USD !!!!!!!

On the other hand, I was rambling about always having compromises in different types of steel and in some situations, certain steels are going to be better for certain tasks.

Like certain high end powdered steels being better suited for "julianning carrots".

That said.... I would never pay $712 for a kitchen knife either!

Well let me tell you, if you have not jullianed carrots in a survival situation, you don't know what you are missing.

I have to say.... I think all of this hype about survival, drinking pee, wearing pee on your head, and eating "raggedy steak rammed on a stick" seems highly over-rated.

I have a pretty good feel for what I "can" do.
And I like being prepared for what "could" happen.
But, I would guess there is a VERY slim chance I will ever "need" to.

So, if and whenever possible, I much prefer clean water and decent meals!

My camp cooking is done right!

I am quite sure I am very content without wearing my own pee (or similar) as well.... survival or not!

The knowledge and preparation is sufficient for me on certain things.

I don't feel a great need to practice "certain" other things.

For now, I am content with just:
- Camping and hiking
- practicing making fires,
- hunting and fishing,
- cleaning, prepping and cooking meals
- and studying certain other survival skills

If I can cook a decent camp meal, grill and similar, I am sure I can do the raggedy steak on a stick if I ever need to. - But, I doubt I will ever "need" to.

In one episode, Bear used his knife (a diving knife) as a signal mirror to get rescued from a raft at sea. That is why, above all else, a knife should be shiny!

Agreed Horndog! One day my Badger gets polished.. I'd take my Badger over Bear's knife- it's cheaper and already bought and paid for.. (At least now I have a sheath on order with Rainwalker!).

I'm not going to 'slag' some of Bear's survival hints (that's been covered!) but he was SAS, he is the real deal. And I wouldn't pee on my hat either..

Oh and just by the by, I recently hit a steel staple while chopping wood with my DF. It didn't chip- the edge rolled, pretty darn good for RC 59!!

In that same episode (and I enjoy the show by the way) - he caught this snake, and was like, "food spoils in half a day, so you've got to keep it alive until you're going to eat it." At the end of the day, after hauling this snake around with him everywhere (prolly a 4 footer at least, pretty big snake), he gets to a river, and says "it won't mind getting wet as long as you keep its head above the water" and he swims across this stupid river w/ one hand while keeping the snake's head above water. Then he gets out of the river, takes like two steps, grabs the snake by the tail, swings it trough the air, and smashes its head on a rock, killing it! I don't know why he didn't just kill the stupid thing, then swim the river, as if 5 minutes would have made a difference. From "he won't mind as long as I keep his head above water" to dead in 5 minutes I thought it was funny.

Are you any more likely to be carrying your Badger Attack? I think the BATAC would make a very good survival knife. And even it is cheaper than that new Bayley Knife. This whole Bear Grylls thing brings up an interesting question that one might post. Which one fixed blade knife of all you own would you choose as a survival knife under all possible conditions? That would include urban, arctic, jungle, desert, swamp, woodlands, or mountain.

No way, man. It's like the canned beefstew I used to take when I went backpacking. Yeah, it was heavier than a lot of other choices I had for a couple of dinners, but man, when you use it --- . My BATAC would definitely be my #1 choice for an all around survival knife. I put mine through its paces yesterday in the woods - it did great! I pair it up w/ the DF though for a perfect camping combo - but if I could just have one, the BATAC it is!!

After the Basic 7, my Badger would be my second choice. HOWEVER I just kind of have the feeling that Dan's knives would be harder to break than those two.. I know it sounds weird but I just don't have as much confidence in my Badger as my S6..

I'm pretty sure that my Yard Hook is stronger than the BATAC too - just because of its thickness. Its almost twice as thick as the BATAC, but I'm sure that INFI isn't twice as strong as SR77

If possible I'd still have the DF w/ me though! Maybe the Hook would be #1... you got me thinking Paul!

That they do, Paul. I was comparing my Buck Special to my RatManDu today. The RMD is much more robust and tough. I would prefer it to even Bear's knife. And the Buck 119 is one of the most popular fixed blade knives ever made. The Busse-made knives are all "hard use" knives. They are all "survival" knives from the GW to the FFBM.

I would take my Hook over my BATAC for survival.

In many of the episodes of Bear carries some kind of 4" folder w/ black grips. I can never make out what brand it is. You can see him push the lock and unfold it when he is done with it.

I like the show it is mindless drivel, but at least it is not a stupid cops, doctors or shmarmy reality show!

SAS guys are no joke.

The Laotians I worked with would catch rats, break their legs, break out their teeth with a nail head, and keep them alive tied up and squirming in thier shirts until dinner time. Then just before dinner, they would walk out into the jungle and come back with all kinds of green plants (the jungle was a super market to them) to eat. Next thing you know, Rats and Rice with a salad on the side. Tasted pretty good, too. We had pizza choppers, though.

I like Man vs Wild. It's entertaining and I do learn something everything I watch the show.

I do however get tired of all the man vs Wild bashing all the time. It seems to be all the rage while we sit on our butts each friday and watch this man doing what he does.

While I certainly wouldn't do a lot of what he does in the show it's important to remind ourselves that we see only what the camerman shows us. Bear on the other hand has a 360 degree view of his surroundings.

As far as taking unnecessary risk. There are numerous tales of people having to take great risk to walk out of the wilderness alive. Some that come to mind are Ernest Shackleton, The Lost Boys of Sudan, Aron Ralston, etc.... Sometimes you need to take risk to main gains. While we're in front of the television we're not presented with all the options, or te lack of options that he is while out in the wilds.

INFI is just kind of like sr77 that is more corrosion proof imho.. Unless you are Cliff Stamp or another knife torturer that is!!

SR77 can still chop thru concrete blocks. That's tough enough for me. That Marine Tuf Cloth seems to prevent rust well enough for Navy Seals, so the corrosion issue can be dealt with easily enough.

Yesterday, on a rerun, Bear was trekking through the Everglades. At first I thought it might be the Altamaha since the terrain is similar. Even Bear was intimidated by the swamp at night. He showed how to build a shelter above the water. The next day he had to cross a gator infested creek. He climbed up a tree that spanned it. I could not do that. When I come to those kinds of places, I wade across very quietly, careful not to to splash or make noise as this excites the gators. I have had smaller 4 ft gators actually rub against my leg while wading through these places. At these times, I always have a large knife drawn as defense. So far I have eaten some gators but they haven't eaten me.

A friend of mine who works in another hotel is a moron of the highest order! He watches both this show and survivorman and since he bought the Ontario RAT-7 he now thinks he is Rambo. He knows nothing of the outdoors and goes camping at designated sheeple campsites. This was his FIRST knife that he received last month. He knows nothing about survival, obtaining water and food and shelter.

He just bought a permit to camp in the Grand Canyon. He knows nothing about deserts and does not know the real dangers out there. So he thinks that he is going to go solo camping/survival in a few weeks. I have tried to talk him out of it and he just keeps saying NO!

I asked what he tends to bring along?

A backpack he says and his knife.

What about food and water?

I'll be drinking from a stream, he said.

Are you crazy? Every stream is polluted! You need to filter it OR boil it! You need about a gallon or more a day and in a desert, what happens when your don't FIND the stream?

He has a magnesium stick and thinks that would be enough! I tried to at least direct him to Hoods Woods and told him that even in solo camping one must have a partner even if that partner is about 500 ft away from you camp in their own camp.... Just in case!

That is the problem with these shows that show no real skill just people jumping off of cliffs into frigid rivers only to drink and wear their pee and run from bears in the middle of the night (it was probably a raccoon!).

You now get these city people who go on a couple of hikes and camp in camping areas NOT in the bush, they watch these shows and their primal urge goes off and all of the sudden they think they are Rambo!

He told me that he has a book! Oh, ok, pardon me! I think you are now prepared!!! NOT!

How can people watch these shows and think that this is ok without any training. Now he won't listen to me and will probably get himself killed. People die there all the time and get lost as well. I doubt he can even read a compass!!! Moron! I know this post will not change his mind.... So goodbye my stupid friend..... It was nice knowing you!!!

Look on the bright side, Dan. He may actually learn something if he survives. If not, he may get a Darwin award.

I have talked to a few folks like that as well Dan. Stupid people are tough to reason with. My best luck has been turning these types on to places like equipped.com that take a wholistic view of survival and tend to give a broader view than a survival show. A couple of people have come back to me as said they were not aware of how much goes in to the preparation side of surviving a bad situation. The others will learn from their mistakes or suffer.

I was just watching the tropical island episode and while he fishes for a meal he refuses to kill a giant sea turtle because "Its on the endangered species list".

well he is on tv. that would come with a super big fine and would probably be fired from the network. in a real survival situation all rules are off. endangered species, defenseless animals, the slowest member of your group who eats too much food....

In a survival situation, your an endangered animal.

I guess your right, It would probably come with a fine and him getting fired from the network (not really a bad thing) and a campaign from Hillary Clinton to ban these evil survival tv shows.

He should have drank his own urine as he instructed us to do in that other episode.

I tried some fried gator a few nights ago, when a friend and I were out shopping for 45/70's. Gator is good.

I've had Gator too a couple of times. It's good.

And yes it tasted kinda like chicken....

So does cat meat. Don't ask how I know.

I have to ask

INFI is just kind of like sr77 that is more corrosion proof imho.. Unless you are Cliff Stamp or another knife torturer that is!!
SR77 can still chop thru concrete blocks. That's tough enough for me. That Marine Tuf Cloth seems to prevent rust well enough for Navy Seals, so the corrosion issue can be dealt with easily enough.
i use the stuff on my khuk

So far I have eaten some gators but they haven't eaten me.
have you killed a gator?
