As an owner of several swamp rats with the res-c handles, I am curious how this s-77 compares to the sr-101 I already trust. Anyone out there know the answer to this yet? I know it's supposed to be tough, but what exactly does that mean for impact and cutting resistance, etc?

And let's get a set of howling rat and bandicoot equivalents in here quick......

-Brendan

This should help: SR101 vs. SR77

I'm really anxious to compare the Scrapper to one of my Camp Tramps. I always thought the Tramp would be nicer with a slightly more pointed blade, like the Scrapper appears to be.

Since I missed out on the CT, I'm looking forward to a similar sized SY knife.

Well Andy, you will just have to get a larger Scrap Yard knife, and then trade me for one of my Camp Tramps ! Tom

Andy you should be able to trade a user you have for a CT, but I would just wait for the Scrapper7....maybe both in a chop off!!

Yeah, I was thinking the Scrapper7 might be an affordable option for a substitute for a CT. Have to wait and see.

I have great hopes for the Scrapper 7 and 9 - it should have a more pointed blade than the Camp Tramp. I have always felt that the Tramp's "bull nose" should be a little more pointed, like the Scrapper's tip. Either way, they should all be great choppers for their size. Now, if the shop can only get them a little sharper ......

You know I hate to beat on the rotting horse again, but what is with that...dull blades? I got a Fehrman once and was scared to handle it because it was scary sharp!.....I mean that thing could cut a fart! Hair would just fall off before the blade got near it....I think that is why I am losing whats on top of my head now. It really isn't a standard..i have gotten some that were perfect, shaved hair and chopper beautifully, but then others would rip paper!

None of my Rats were sharp enough for me. The only reason I've been able to think of is that perhaps they keep them a little on the dull side for inexperienced newbies who buy an "indestructible knife" to prevent them from damaging the edge (rolling, microchipping) by using a supersharp edge on a really hard surface to "test it", then trying to return it to the shop as "damaged".

Where-as an experienced knife owner would know to not use a straight razor sharp edge and, I dunno, cut another knife in half with it. An experienced knife owner should have no problem sharpening a knife to the level that they want it, without it being too sharp/too thin edged for the desired task. That's the best reason I can think of. To protect the dummies from themselves.

Kinda like when you give a kid a really dull pocket knife, and don't have to worry about him cutting himself with it, because by the time he's old enough to learn how to sharpen it, he's responsible enough to know how to use it.

Interesting quandry! Yet companies such as Becker and Cold Steel can ship blades shaving sharp. I wonder if they have a big problem with fraudulent returns ?!? Tom

right -- seems like they vary a little (one of my S6 shaves, the other doesn't), but mostly come with a "working" edge -- what i expected after reading the description -- very hard use knife geared to torturous use on very hard media... plus it seems a lot easier to make a thick edge more keen than to try to take out large dents/rolls (god forbid - chips!). just a thought...

We need a 5/16" (or thicker) SR-77 BOWIE!!! (Written back in early '07 -- Regulator Premonition?)

Andy - Keep checking eBay, as well as maybe post a message over at the Swamp. A few guys over there have sold extras of some models at little or no mark-up to fellow Rats. Good luck!

Speakin' of lawnmowers, I was thinking last night...wouldn't it be great if Scrap Yard or Swamp Rat made lawnmover blades? They'd stay sharp forever and resist dings/chips from rocks. Maybe they should start a new company to make them...

No GF. I was just trying to imagine our troops in the desert wearing steel-plated armour vests. The flak jackets we had in VietNam were bad enough, but steel plates? Have you given up already on your quest for the big choppers ? I think you need to keep reminding them at the Yard.

We had ceramic plates in the desert....when I was on the police force here we had steel trama plates. I actually brought it with me and kept it, the ceramic plate and a few playboys in my vest!

Don't feel bad, Andy. I never got around to getting a camp tramp either. I just figured they'd be around forever.
My new scrapper is helping me get over any feelings of loss I was experiencing, though.

GF - now THAT is being prepared!

rooikat - good point about "blade substitution". I still don't understand the Swamp's decision to drop the "flagship model" BattleRat and excellent Camp Tramp. I have great hopes for the Yard, and would really like to see them make more great knives at affordable prices. Tom

Hmm I think the horse died as a result of bowie product testing and a lack of band-aids!

So the American Humane Society don't go after Dan we should point out to them the horse is imaginary, no horses were harmed during the discussions on the forum... The straw in the 'yard is just a coincidence, the fact lots of band-aids were used recently is just plain strange... (Shh Mr Ed just sit down and stop complaining about your leg being sore!)

Christmas time
Big bowies and wine
Children singing Slades old rhyme
With logs on the fire
Bowie'd from a tree
It's time to give thanks
For the joy that we feel...

(sing to Cliff Richard's 'Mistletoe and wine' song, anyone heard of him over there? Slade are an ancient band who did a big xmas hit in about 1974 which gets played on the radio lots every xmas... I must point out I'm NOT a Cliff fan!!!)
