What are your favorite movies showing survival scenes/situations? My absolute favorite is coming out today - Collectors Edition of "Red Dawn".

Bar none the best survival movie has to be Animal House. I would not have made it through college without it.

You gotta love RED DAWN; I dont care who you are: "We're running out of food." "We've still got plenty of meat." "Just stuff you shot!"
Classic dialog.
I have to say I liked Dawn of the Dead for the humor factor. (hey, it was a survival situation of a sort) A great serious movie is The Snow Walker. While it is not a region I expect to deal with, it had some great lessons to teach about the importance of knowledge, learning, and keeping a clear head.

I like " The Edge " Seems like a classic survival in the woods movie. They even have to kill a bear.
Red Dawn is one of my fav movies i have to get the collectors set when i get paid.

What was that movie.....where a plane crashed in the mountains and the people had to eat the dead bodies?

Another Red Dawn fan here. I first saw the moive as a yoot and I remember being really glad I had a Buck fixed blade next to my bed. I am not a Patric Swayze fan, but he was good in that movie.

All stuff mentioned before, but my favorites as well.
Red Dawn for sure!
First Blood (minus being chased by a whole town).
I just saw Jeremiah Johnson a few months ago and it is very good.
The Edge.
Swiss Family Robinson was good (at least I loved it as a kid) even though it is not hardcore.

First Blood was good. especially the mountain scenes and man traps.
the town scene with the never ending belt of ammo did annoy me though.

the town scene with the never ending belt of ammo did annoy me though. My favorite parts were when he was alone and made the tarp shirt, fire and killed/butchered the pig. After that it was back to normal Rambo stuff. I also think Gilligan's Island should get a mention, I wish I had the professors skills!

The Swiss Family Robinson is a great movie. The youngest son always made me mad. He was always doing something dumb. Twords the end is the best when they have to defend the island from those nasty pirates hehe.
Do any of you remember the movie " Hatchet " where that kid goes to see his dad in like alaska or canada and the small plane he is in goes down after the pilot has a hart attack and all he has is his hatchet to survive?

Oh yeah! The book was better than the movie. The book was written by Gary Paulsen, one of my favorite writers. There was also a part 2 and 3 to the book. It’s a good book for younger kids to interest them in survival and the outdoors. It was also a Newberry award winner.

Just rediscovered what's now my favorite . . "Panic in Year Zero". Even though it's an old B&W 60's film, there's just something about this story of a man's attempts to keep his family safe after a nuke attack on L.A. Locating & obtaining food, weapons, & tools; locating & attempting to conceal a retreat, hiding cashes of food in case their main location is discovered or for trade if captured; bartering ammo for medical services; etc. Yeah, there's lots of good ideas represented in this oldie.

Thanks for the welcome, ksjumpmd. Been peeking in off & on for a while, but decided to jump in on this one since this survival movie was so fresh in my mind. Kind of odd finding that old movie, hadn't seen anything about it or even thought aboubt it in years. Just happened to be on the back side of the "Last Man on Earth" DVD that I just bought for my son (he's into zombie movies right now). I think that thing that I liked most about it was Ray Milland's role as the Dad. He reminded me of my Dad & other men of that era, normal everyday guys but they were all vets of WWII. Having lived through actual combat gave them something & Milland, in real life reputed to one of the finest marksmen the British Army ever produced, managed to bring this something to his role. His character starts out as a normal middle class Joe taking his family on a fishing trip, but when the hammer falls, he slips into a very military mindset with what seems to be ease & familarity.

I picked up the collector's edition this weekend of Red Dawn. Didn't get to watch the special features yet, had to jump straight in and watch the movie again for like the millionth time.

The Matrix. That is if you ever find yourself in a futuristic world where most people are hooked up to an interactive computer grid designed to sedate you while it sucks out your bodies electrical energy.

you know, matrix does fit, in a hi-tech way. Also 'total recall'.

Ok, I realize this post is 3 months old but I was setting around with nothing better to do than read old post.....
Go rent a movie called "The Trigger Effect" It's not in the class of what was mentioned here but it is a realistic urban survival movie.

nice to see an old thread recycled.
one of the recent episodes of "Life" showed the star being attacked by a suspect with a knife, instead of drawing his service weapon he pulls out what appears to be the spyderco police full serated model.

Evil forces coming up through our southern border - imagine that! Another good survival movie is THREADS, a British movie. I'm kind of surprised that nobody mentioned "THE DAY AFTER", made in 1983. It tried to show the after-effects of a nuclear war.

Avenge Me Boys! Avenge Me!
What was the survival TV series about post nuclear war in the early 90's with the two teams driving the suv's across country? they were some sort of APC's with a set up of tri-wheels that rotated?
Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Nanook of the North, the first full length documentary film ever made. Amazing and informative. Go rent it, folks.

Wiggitty, I don't remember a series but there was a movie called "Damnation Alley" with George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent that sounds like what you are talking about.

I loved RED DAWN ,it was one of the few movies I loved as a kid that I still think is good. It is funny how scared of the Soviets we were. They were just as worried the US would attack them and actually that was more likely.

"The Snow Walker" and "Seraphim Falls" are decent films with some survival elements.
