Just looked out back and saw my tortoise crossing the freshly mowed grass. Haven't seen him or her all year. What a beautiful shell. Headed for the creek. Would make a pretty knife handle, but we have synthetics for that now. I'd rather have the turtle.

Tried to get closer, then he pulled his head in.

I love seeing things like this in my yard.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

It's about 60 yards across the mowed part. Last year the turtle was in my front drive near the snake crossing. About once a year I see him. My daughter will be angry at me again for not catching him. That's what she gets for sleeping late and not helping old Dad with the yard yesterday. She loves turtles and snakes.

Box turtle?
Yeah, that's what I'd call it. I'm sure there are those on this forum who could tell us the exact species. Last year when I saw it the shell was wet from rain and it was just stunning in its beauty.

The turtle is a really cool little creature. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The Magazine I work with did an artical on them a while back, I'll have to try and find it.

Seems those turtles have a established territory and he's probably making his usual rounds.

That shell looks a lot nicer on him than on anything else I could imagine... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

There are plenty of sliders and snappers around for that. I was briefly married to a girl from Okeefenokee Swamp. Lovely gal. She would serve me catfish head soup, turtle, and about anything else from the swamp. Turtle is good.
