Hey, hey! Don't none of you guys be talkin' crap about my hero:

What a cheezy flea market crap salesman. I am ashamed to admit that I bought one of those "scorpion" machetes. It was neither sharp nor tough. The proprietary ITSNOT steel is both brittle and dull. The handles are firmly attached with solid soft brass pins to ensure separaton for the "break away" safety handle. I hear the knives are made from Yugo door trim.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

No. As I understand it, here's how they rank with relationship to one another:

INFI: Wear resistance, 1st place. Corrosion resistance, 1st place. Toughness, tied for 1st.

SR101: Wear resistance, 2nd place. Corrosion resistance, 3rd place. Toughness, 3rd place.

SR77: Wear resistance, 3rd place. Corrosion resistance, 2nd place. Toughness, tied for 1st.

Ok, so Corrosion resistance and toughness can be measured but how is wear resistance measured? Everything I've seen on the subject has it as rather subjective.

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

That makes INFI then really the wonder steel.

The "facts" to support this seem fairly sketchy and somewhat subjective, but this is pretty much how I would rank them based on what I have read.

Yes, INFI is a wonder steel, but at a pretty high price relative to SR101 and SR77.

Generally speaking, INFI can be beaten by certain other steels in certain specific catagories, but as a package of characteristics for knife use, INFI is VERY hard to beat - except in one catagory - Price!

I feel you could EASILY still refer to SR101 and SR77 as wonder steels as well. There really are a lot of good steel choices for knives right now. To me, I will still argue that it mostly depends on the intended use of a knife, knife design and who heat treats and makes the knife.

SR101 and SR77 may rank slightly behind INFI in the mentioned catagories, but it is commonly believed that the differences are relatively small percentages.

So, at some point, the law of diminishing returns kicks in and you can start to justify SR101 and SR77 as being so good they are good enough. If you can accept such a concept as "good enough", then it is very easy to view SR101 and SR77 as a better bang for the buck. - My opinion.

For the record, I am in no way trying to bash INFI. As I have said many times, INFI is incredible steel - and INFI may in fact be the best steel for knives if you rate knife steel by the best overall ranking of total characteristics (as opposed to ranking on any given single characteristic).

If you can afford it and just want the best or if you absolutely must have or need the best for whatever reason, then INFI may very well be the best choice.

What strucks me,is that it seems to have on par toughness to L7/SR77 then after all.Plus an added almost stainless like rust resistance and topnotch edgeholding.
Well,the BusseFamily knife thing is really addictive....have to save up more knifemoney <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/loopy.gif" alt="" />

Couldn't have lost any of it from between his ears, Jeeps. There was nothing there to begin with. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Sure can't argue with that.
