PoP, I have to aggre with Bond! I have never used a Gerber but I do own both the Leatherman Super Tool and the Leatherman Micro scissors and both have traveled with me to Kenya and other parts of the worl and have held up to the abuse that I have put them through. Leatherman gets my vote and the Wave seems to be the bes now that the Super Tools is gone.

Good luck PoP! I can't wait to meet you next month!!!

I would recommend a Leatherman Ti Charge like mine. It’s like an upgraded version of the Wave. It’s the same as the Wave, except better blade steel (154cm), titanium scales, and bronze bushings so the tools don’t clump together when you try to use one. I know you like nice custom knives, so I think you’d like it. When I was choosing, I was debating between the Wave and Charge. I decided since it was something I’d be carrying for several years every day, I might as well pay the extra money and get the nicer one. They’re pretty heavy though, they weigh like a half pound.

I also got the “bit kit” for mine, it was like an extra $20 on eBay. They take special shaped bits, not the standard ones. You can “convert” standard bits to Leatherman bits if you have a benchgrinder and locking clamp pliers to hold it with. With the bit kit you have all the unusual shaped bits like hex or star that might come in handy. I don’t carry the extra bits though, I leave them in the truck. I liked the idea of the replaceable bits, because if you over torque a screwdriver bit and bend it, you can just replace the bit instead of the whole tool.

Here’s a pic of my Ti Charge

I also have all three models of Craftsman multitools. I like to use them for really hard work where I’m afraid of damaging my Leatherman. Since they’re made by Craftsman, if anything happens to them, I can just trade them at Sears for a new one.

Here’s a pic of my Craftsman multitools. You can see more pics of them HERE.

Here’s a couple threads from the Swamp that may help too.

Which Multitool?

Thanks again all. Andy I should have known to ask you first! I know you NEVER leave home without a Multi-Tool on.
I did it last night. I pulled the plug on a new Leatherman Wave in Stainless Steel for $48.00. It was a steal compared to the other tools out there. Six bucks to ship it, only drag was that the seller does NOT accept Pay Pal so I had to mail off a money order today to him in New Jersey. With any luck I'll have it by next Saturday instead of this, but such is life.

I am very glad for all the advice. The response for Leatherman products was almost unanimous. That speaks volumes for it's legacy.
Now the waiting game time will drag forever until I see the package from New Jersey in my postal box.

Thanks again,
Peace.

Any of the suggestions here would work well especially with Leatherman making such excellent screwdrivers and bits .But for my needs (BOMB PROOF AND SIMPLE TO USE )I can't beat the Victorinox Swisstool the screwdriver bits can be a touch awkward much like the standard s.a.k but the rest of the tools work really well and if it gets gummed up you can even throw it in the dishwasher with the makers blessing!

The biggest downside to the recent Leatherman models is the short screwdriver socket. A screwdriver does no good if it can’t reach the screw. Leatherman finally got wise. They now make an extension you can plug into the socket. It adds three inches to the screwdriver. It also takes standard hex bits. You are no longer limited to the specialty Leatherman flat bits. You can use any hex bit you can find. Check the Accessories Store at the Leatherman site.
