The biggest downside to the recent Leatherman models is the short screwdriver socket. A screwdriver does no good if it can’t reach the screw. Leatherman finally got wise. They now make an extension you can plug into the socket. It adds three inches to the screwdriver. It also takes standard hex bits. You are no longer limited to the specialty Leatherman flat bits. You can use any hex bit you can find. Check the Accessories Store at the Leatherman site.

that's a great tip. thanks.

PoP,
I personally carry the leatherman wave, just about every day. The knife blades are full size, and have one-hand opening ability.
I also have a leatherman mini-tool, which I wear to work a lot. It is small enough, that most people think it is a pager or cell phone.
I a;sp have a leatherman micra on my keychain, and a SOG mimitool on my jeep keys. The SOG mini has a pliars feature, while the leatherman micra has a scissors.
Out of all of them, I seem to use the micra and the wave the most.
What I like about having a multi is I can use it for crappy jobs that one would normally use a knife for, thus saving the knife for it's real purpose, which is cutting.

Leatherman has a good warranty. I broke a screwdriver blade off once, prying with it. When I returned it, they not only replaced the broken blade, but updated the other blades to current specs, ans put a new pliars head, with wire snips, on it. NO charge. That impressed me.

I did it last night. I pulled the plug on a new Leatherman Wave in Stainless Steel for $48.00.

Alright! Congrats! You’ll have to give us a review after you get it and try it out. I think you’ll be really happy with it.

i own those tools too but my sears no longer carries them.

Really? Hm…I hope they don’t phase ‘em out. Kinda makes it hard to trade them in. Good thing I have more than 2-3 of each model already.

Alright! I didn’t know about that. Thanks for the info!

That’s good to hear. I’ve never had to use a Leatherman warranty, but it sounded kinda iffy to me since it said limited lifetime warranty or something like that. So far the only thing wrong with my Charge is the diamonds are wearing off the file. I dunno if they’d cover that or not. I pretty much only use it on fingernails.

as far as im concerned LEATHERMAN is the only brand of multi-tool and i am hard to please.this is coming from a scrapyard, tops, rangerknife kind of guy.LEATHERMAN is the 1/4in thick,sr101,res-c version of a multi-tool imho.i never got the big deal about multi-tools either.then one day i was contemplating the needs and purposes of my BOB and started thinking how usefull one could be,went out and bought one and now wont go into the woods without it after using it and realising how usefull it is.now im hooked.you can feel the quality in your hand when you hold it.if you dont want to become addicted dont take that first hit ha ha

When Tim Leatherman invented the multitool—he was traveling and got tired of trying to fix a cranky car with a SAC—he tried to market the idea. He couldn’t give it away. Tool companies thought it was a knife, and weren’t interested. Knife companies sent him to tool companies. One executive at a prominent knife company told him, “That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever seen.” So Tim went into business for himself.

I know SOG makes some multi-tools are they any good? Any1 here handle one or use one?

I have a SOG Powerlock and I love it. It has a geared plier, not something other multi's have. They are a bit on the expensive side and is quite heavy but the workmanship is grade-A. This is my second SOG multitool. After owning the first one, I will accept nothing else. To each his own.

P.S. My first SOG didnt die, technology just caught up to it.

I just found this thread PoP! You know I was moving, sorry I missed it. But you won't go wrong with your Leatherman PoP! They make em nice and they fit the hand very good. I would have told you to go try em all out for yourself and see what features they all have and what best fits your dawg paws and needs.

I have a LeatherMan, Sog, and Swisstool and the Sog and Swisstool are TANKS! and not easy to stuff in your pocket. The Sog Powerlock has the best pliers in the business IMO because they are geared, which transfers more power to your object/target. But you didn't want/need pliers (I use them all the time!). The Swisstool has their tools on the outside so you don't have to open up the whole thing which is sweet for me. I have heard of Gerbers and Leathermans rusting, spotting, especially the newer ones. Swisstool's are famous for their wear.

Of all of them to me Swisstool was the best made (just smart engineering) and prettiest Leatherman fit/feel best and lightest, Sog seemed tuff and with many options (you can interchange tools, I took out the scissors and put in the web/seatbelt cutter).

Your Leatherman should last you a few lifetimes PoP it's just they cost so much for me, you pay for the name too. My Sog was 45 and 50 for my Swisstool. If you want to get more multi-tools (and you should you steel junkie) wait till around thanksgiving and christmas, they have great deals then..

I just found this thread too...

PoP, the Wave is great. I started carrying the bigger Surge when it came out because of the added versitility of the changeable saw blades. Now I carry several different types of blades for it including one of those carbide blades that can saw throught hardened tool steel. In a desperate situation, being able to saw through a pad lock could make th e difference between life and death, you just never no what situation your going to run into...

Be prepared so there's no regrets...

You can't get them from Leatherman, for the Surge, that I know of, but since it's the standard T-shank jigsaw blades you can find them at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, True Value, heck I even found some at Harbor Frieght yesterday.

I EDC 3 or 4 different saw blades with the Surge everyday...

until then i'll just tape a hacksaw blade to the inside of my shin.
