Their reputation has gone downhill, as has their quality. I think their fixed blades are crap and way overpriced with the exception of the Bushman. I used to have a half dozen Bushman knives, but now I’ve narrowed it down to a large and a small. They’re constantly looking for ways to cut corners, and lower the quality but not the price. For instance, the Bushman sheaths used to be leather, but now they’re nylon.
I have several of their pocket knives, and I’ve been happy with them. I think they’re a good buy for the money for a heavy duty folder. Of course, I didn’t pay what CS asks for them, I got mine on eBay for less then $50 each. I have two Voyagers and a Recon 1. The Recon 1 is the original style that was made in Japan of AUS-8a steel. The later inferior versions are made in Taiwan of a lesser steel and poorer quality scales.
Mostly what I like that they sell are the unusual items like the throwing shovel, walking sticks, plastic knives, etc. Novelties and gadgets. I have several of their plastic knives, Torpedo (thrower), throwing shovel, and my City Stick is my favorite walking stick.

I think older Cold Steel stuff is just fine. I have a bunch of tantos, the original recon tanto, magnum tanto, and recon scout. They are as good as anything out there. As the years went by, the quality and vision seemed to have been diluted. I do have to say, my new voyager Xl that arrived here a day or so ago is just fine. It will be my carry knife this weeekend. Very light and flat, for a 5" blade folder.

I have to disagree with Diceman. American citizens should be able to own anything, whether others think they should or not. It is part of being American. Unlike other countries, we are citizens, not subjects. Citizens can be armed. I have fiberglass knives. I have titanium knives. I have plastic knives. I study Karate, which cannot be picked up by any sort of scanner. So does my brother. He is a cop, and the local FEMA rep. My wife does, too. She's a fed. You'd also be shocked at how many bomb disposal and SWAT guys use non-metallic or titanium knives. It is a lot safer for them, due to their job.

Roo, Dice has a point and i will have to agree to disagree with him...as long as he still thinks I'm pretty!! We should be able to carry or own what we wish within reason
I have made several plastic knives in my time just for giggles and I still own a couple and carry them from time to time
heck I made my own ak..now THAT should concern people!!!

I tend to like the older patterns better. They could have stopped making folders with the second generation of the Voyager as far as I'm concerned. Their 5" XL Voyager is awesome! I also like the replaceability of the hunting and EDC knives I guess. I mean if my Scrapper 6 was stolen out of my truck have fun finding another one. I also prefer the partial width tang with over molded handle over the Ontario Rats and Ranger knives. Guess that is why I came here.
I have a Carbon V Master Hunter and an AUS8 master hunter and I love them both and I am tired of feeling guilty for it I guess. The handles fit me much better than the small scrappers do. I have used my Carbon V SRK for years too and I will try one of the ones in AUS8 eventually.
I had a Trailmaster and a Recon Scout until I realized the handles were getting loose from chopping. I sold them when Carbon V was no more and got new price out of them. I bought a Dogfather and Scrapper 6 and havn't looked back.
Be prepared.......It is more than a motto it is a way of life.

My CS knives have served me well. I sold my Trailmaster. Once I got the Dog Father, the Trailmaster was made obsolete. I still like their folders. I just wish they were American made. I prefer to buy American when I can. I drive Fords and Jeeps and Harleys. Sometimes the product I want just isn't made here. One day I'll get a Fallkniven. I have a Canadian Grohmann Survival on order, so at least it is North American made. I odered it with micarta scales and full flat grind. Steel is German 116 stainless (like CS uses}.

Fallkniven is great I have a Tor model and an A2 they are razor sharp and maintain a wicked edge. The sheaths are high quality leather and the A2 can actually be carried IWB with the factory sheath.....it is nice to sport an 8" blade without being noticed!

5/16ths with a convex laminated blade. It is a wicked chopper...nice stacked leather handle...I was worried about about retention, but as soon as a little sweat or blood gets on it...it tacks right up and stays put.

I would never buy any Cold Steel. They don't make knives, they are a marketing company. LT is a blowhard snake oil salesman. The bottom line is all important, and they cater primarily to the ignorant. They steal designs, they cut corners.
There are simply too many superior knife makers around to ever give a cent to them.

I am learning not to let personal issues get between me and a knife I want...while I think 98% of their products are crap...they have a few I like....such as the older TrailMaster....great chopper and helluva blade. I want to try a San Mai version if I can find one for the right price....not the 400ish CS retail crap.
Same with Strider...I hate the fella on a personal level, but [censored], he makes a few....very few mind you knives that I think are outstanding. Like a RC...shameless wanted plug.
Buy it, try it...if you don't like it sell it, don't trash it. These companies don't stay in business by selling only trash.
