I would if I had too, but I'd like a pad that's made for sleeping on without bugs and needles, but I bet it would smell good!

I have tried many pads. From the cheap blue closed cell foam, the egg crate z-rest to the self inflating. I am a self prescribed weight watching weiner when it comes to packing my gear. The self inflating pads produced such a great nights sleep it made the cut anyway. The best sleep you will ever have is to ditch the pad altogether and get a hammock. Much less bulk than a tent and the bulk and weight of a sleeping pad is no longer necessary. A double savings and a better sleep.

When I tried staying out and getting some pics during that meteorite shower several weeks ago, I thought I’d be fine if I just laid a tarp down on the ground to lay on. I thought that it would help keep the bugs from crawling on me, and keep me from getting grass stains. I thought the grass would be thick enough for padding, but it wasn’t. My back ached for 3+ days. I then realized I wasn’t going to be able to do that anymore.

I've never used a pad before, then on my move we stayed at a place where they rented wall tents with cots and pads, I really liked em! cot will come later but a pad would be nice now, and they rate most sleeping bags "With" pads underneath!

That is the downside to the tarp/hammock. Without trees or some else to tie off to, sleeping on the ground is uncomfortable.

depends on the ground, and how much built in padding you have.
