im sure this has probably been asked before but im kinda new to this forum.sorry if its a repeat.

a lot of you guys will know better than me:...which is better...a scrapyard or ranger pound for pound, and why?

sr77 vs. 5160
resperine vs. micarta
heat treatment?
so on and so on.

i have a lot of rangers but have only been able to get my hands on a yardhook so far.i like'em both but am not knowledgeable enough about the different specs to know which one is truly top dog.

seeing how this is the yard forum try not to be biased.

Thats the only real good thread I found after searching, but there's a lot of good stuff in there.

If that doesn't clear everything up though, feel free to fire away w/ questions!

I like both companies very, very much. I like Micarta on smaller knives and ResC on choppers, but thats just me.

i think your right about the handles and that is going to be different with different people.i guess my main questions are about the two steels and the heat treatments.i understand 5160 but dont know much about sr77 and how the two compare.

This is the way I see it. I own Rangers and Scrap Yards. For a chopper, the Dog Father easily beats the RD-9. The Res C handle is more shock absorbent and the broader, heavier blade of the DF just chops better. But the RD-9 is lighter and easier to carry. It still chops pretty well. The RD-7 is a great all-around knife, big enough to chop and small enough to carry all day. I like it a little better than the Yard Guard, but I can't say it is better. I prefer the Scrapper 6 to the RD-6. The S6 just has better feel and balance to me. I prefer the RD-4 to the Dumpster Mutt. But I consider BOTH brands to be serious hard use knives. The SR-77 probably has an advantage in toughness, but it is academic. You're not going to break an RD without a BIG cheater bar on it. The 5160 is a good tough spring steel. The full tang micarta handles are a little more durable than the Res C, but not nearly as comfortable. I like BOTH brands. That's why I own both brands.

is sr77 the same as s7 and if not whats the difference?

sykc says it differentially heat treats its blades.i know ranger does not.
how big of a difference does that make in a hard use chopper?

Scrapyard does not differentially treat the blades. They are through hardened as far as I know. The only Busse blade I'm aware of that is differentially heat treated is the Swamp Rat M6.

Justin has a very good heat treat for his blades as well, but they are all though hardened also.

For those who want to get wrapped around the axle on heat treating, toughness, hardness, composition, and such, there are those on this forum who can tell you how many angels can dance on the point of Dumpster Mutt. They can take you from the Iron Age to INFI. The proof is in the pudding and the eating thereof. S7 is made into SR77 by a proprietary heat treament. That is the key to its edge retention along with toughness that jackhammer steel has. I just take 'em out and use 'em for their intended purposes and give my impressions. I don't care if they do it with pixie dust, differential heat treatment, sub-zero quench, or 3% unobtainium, just so it performs.

S7 > 5160
SR77 (with busse proprietary cryo/deap+long+heat treatment > any 5160

as for ResC vs. Micarta, thats up to your hand and planned use.

All Scrap yard blades are through hardened. A couple of rats had been differentially hardened.

Regardless of what is done to S7 to create SR77, the performance speaks for it.

I have done things with my Dumpster Mutt that I wondered if I should... Just check out the scrap yard mechanics thread. I have put my Dog Father through exterior doors (Door got dogged thread). The coating takes a beating but the blade laughs at me.

You will see Dan talk about striving for a great price performance ratio. He has made it. I have no doubts that Dan's blades here will handle whatever I can throw at them.

The biggest thing you will notice is how nice the res-c handles are when you are doing any extended chopping. The micarta will give you trouble after a bit. I have serious callouses on my hands and even I finally blistered up after a really long chopping session this summer.

AFAIK, All Rats from about 6" and larger are Differentially heat treated, except for the one run of through-hard Black and Tan battle rats.
