I actually just went a few rounds of research for one of these new high-tech LED lights.
..... this is probably an Outdoors and Fieldcraft forum type topic ... (???).
But, anyways....
I have had a couple of cheap key-chain LED lights from the $10 range.
I had one that was decent, but I don't know how many lumens. In any event, it was handy on a fair number of occassions.
I kept reading a lot a high praise for Fenix. I think high praise for Surefire might be a given (???). But, I went with the Fenix. I can't give you a great reason to compare or justify the two models you chose.
The P1 uses the CR123A batteries. It looks like the G2 does as well. These seem to be great batteries as far as power to size. But, they are more expensive and not as readily available as AA. Plus, you apparently need to buy "protected" CR123A batteries if you intend to recharge and you have to get a specialized recharger. The rechargers look like they can be had for $10 - $20, but I already have a pretty good AAA & AA recharger and lots of NiMH batteries.
The CR123A batteries are lithium.
I ordered the L2D Premium from Lighthound yesterday.......
See:
Fenix L2D Premium I just check my mail and there it was!!!!
I just stuck some batteries in it and played with it a bit in my garage, closets and similar dark rooms. It seems pretty bright. Quality of construction is very good. This Premium version has the Orange peel reflector. Apparently, the smooth reflectors vs. Orange peel give you different beem types. I think this Orange Peel reflector give a VERY nice quality beam - nice focus with strong in the middle and good functional beam width. The quality of the beam in the center and the width is very nice.
I think it is supposed to have 6 settings, but I haven't figured them out yet (????).
I figured out two - which may be high and low (?????) and strobe. - No instructions, so I will have to research some more I guess..... (*** EDIT - I found the instructions under the sheath... will read later.)
Lighthound was very good to work with. I called and asked some questions and they were very helpful... plus they shipped it fast for me!
They also sent me a little freebe keychain, plasic diamond shaped light. It looks like a cheap freebe light, but I just made the mistake of looking at it's bulb and now I can't see my screen very well - temporary blindness and spots... not too smart <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/paperbag.gif" alt="" />
Anyway, I don't know that I can offer a ton of advice. Based on the size lights you seem to be looking at, it seems like there are a bunch of good choices with various trade-offs in price, size and light output (????).
The L2D I just bought looks to be comparable in price to the G2, but much brighter - If I understand the lumens ratings (????).
-----------
G2: 5.25" / 80 lumens (Chunkier than the L2D, but I didn't see the diameter listed) (I Saw for $65.00)
Surefire G2 ----------
L2D Premium: 5.8"; .75" diameter / 175 lumens (I paid $59.50 - non-premium versions are less)) - Longer and skinnier than the P series from Fenix and not quite as powerful as comparable CR123 versions, but cheaper and more readily available batteries and pretty strong.
* The premium versions apparently just gives you a little bit more power for similar efficiency. Differences in price for premium seem to be about $4 - $6 depending...
----------
P2D Premium: 3.165"; .83" dia / 175 lumens (Premium version = $58.00, other versions less) Smaller - great power to size, versatile light settings, CR123A batteries
Fenix P2D -----------
P3D Premium: 4.49" / .83" dia / 200 lumens (Premium version = $64.50 - other versions less) - Apparently, one of the more popular models.
Fenix P3D Premium -----------
Fenix LOD Luxeon Rebel - 2.9"; .55" diameter - 60 lumens on 1 AAA battery. Very small and ideal for pocket keychain type carry.
Fenix LOD Luxeon Rebel -----------
Fenix P1D - 2.8"; .83" diameter - Actually shorter than the LOD by a hair, but thicker and chunkier and more powerful - various models and light power seem to go up to 135 lumens (???? - maybe more if I missed some - many options) I think I prefer the P2D for a hair longer because I prefer the one-handed operation push-button clicker at the butt of the light and more light settings. Whereas the P1D is a twist function.

*** The UltraFire R2 & R1 (essentially the same except for different button location) seems like a great bang for the buck!!!
200 Lumens, small and about as cheap as you can get for this size and power an LED light. Quality doesn't appear to be as high as Surefire, Fenix, Novatac and a few other, but better price.
Ultrafire R series Hope that helps. I am guessing Stansbrew will jump in here. He apparently has quite a few LED lights.
You should check some of the info on the Oudoors & Fieldcraft forum.
