Demelone just started a thread about his wood kit and mentioned he carried lip balm in his Altoids tin. I didn't want to jump in on that thread but thought I'd mention I've had good luck using Chapstick as a rust preventative in carbon steel edges. Easy to carry and it works well.

In case you were wondering, I like the strawberry flavor. It makes my lip so nice and pink.

I don't use chapstick brand, just because I don't like what it does to my lips. I like the kiss my face or whatever ones, or else alba botanica. I don't really worry about using it as a rust preventative, although I guess the petroleum jelly in it would work well for that. I just prefer the tuf-cloth, since they don't take up much room and don't pull dirt the way that other lubricants do.

And your knife taste good! I would guess that the parafin or whatever they are using coats the blade. When in a pinch use what you can!

I normally use a corrosion inhibitor designed for firearms on my blades with great luck. Can't for the life of me recall the brand right now though.

It makes a great fire starter too if added to some tinder. Makes it burn longer.

i've been meaning to try my hand at making some fire straws with cotton balls rubbed with petroleum jelly. guess that's basically what chap stick is. wonder if the artificial flavors would make it burn hotter?

That is good advice! I use chapstick as well but threw in what would fit the tin. I will also have to try it in the fire.

Yes, like Terry said, it makes a great accelerant for a fire, as well as corrosion preventive.

I don't use Chapstick brand, because I prefer no scent and no flavor, due to wildlife.

Lip balm is fairly useful stuff to carry.

Savex > Chapstick

I have no love of Carmex
Once had a cocobutter lip stuff that was nice..

Stay away from the glossy/shiney/pink stuff, its for Edwards.

I had a pal who hikes all the mountains in Scotland. Anyway he used Chapstick to stop the chaffing between his arse cheeks, so one day one of his walking companions spotted my mate putting it back in his pocket and says " is that Lip Balm " my pal says that it is and the other bloke said " D'ya mind if I borrow it cos my lips are all cracked with this wind " of course my pal lends it to him and smiles as he watches him rub it around his lips !!!!!

I don't like chapstick because once you start using it your lips quit producing
the stuff that keeps them from getting chapped and you get addicted. They are also perfect germ factories even if you don't use them scottish style. They are wax and flavour where the germs can live and have food ,they stay in your pocket so they are nice and warm and you rub them on your lips and some people even share them.
I read something that said you would be better off licking a toilet seat.

I think they use to say that about kissing! Moderation I say, when I need it, I use it, when I don't, I don't. Bacteria is everywhere (if we only knew...) I touch doorknobs and shake hands and "breath the air!"
life is too short...

As a motorcyclist, I often use some kind of lip balm. I mean, what's the point of bar hopping if you can't kiss the girls?

unsub, you're thinking to narrowly. I never use chapstick for my lips. I use it as a folder lubricant, a fire accelerant, a corrosion preventive, etc.

I carry a tin of Burt’s Beeswax myself. I like the tingly peppermint; it’s like Altoids for your lips. I never really liked tubes of lip balm. Sometimes the base would rotate in my pocket, and when I’d go to use it, it would be all smushed and messed up. And with Burt’s, when the container is empty, you have a handy small little tin that’s great for holding small things in your kit like tinder, fishing hooks, etc.

I use it as a “food grade” rust preventative for some of my knives. Sometimes you see sellers of knives on eBay mention in their ad that their knife is “mint” or “minty fresh”, but mine really are. I also can use it to add to tinder if needed for firestarting.

You also might want to try adding some fatwood sawdust and/or magnesium powder to them too. That’s what I did with some of mine.

One good thing about the chapstick, or any tube for that matter is that you can use the body of the tube to check your blade for small chips/dings. Just draw the blade down the body of the tube..... Better than the old fingernail trick and safer too.

You can also configure an empty chapstick tube so that it can launch the cap a good 15-20 feet or so. With practice one might be able to pull off eyeball shots in close quarters.
